Help with weight loss

So, three years ago, I went on BC. Seasonelle, to be exact. The doctor switched me to Seasonique a few months later as it was shown to cause less spotting than Seasonelle. I had been on BC about 12-15 years before that but I went off it partly due to weight gain. A lot of doctors claim that weight gain with hormonal BC is a myth, but that's BS since many of them that claim it's a myth are men. Hormones affect women in a lot of different ways. Anyhoo, the first two years I was back on BC, I didn't notice much weight gain. However, last year, they came out with the generic version of Seasonique and my doctor and insurance company switched me to the generic as they want you to get the medication that is the least expensive available. I have gained 10 pounds in a year. Last year, I was only able to lose 5 of those pounds. After my vacation in Cancun this summer, it turned out that I regained the 5 pounds I had previously lost and so far, I've only lost 2.5 pounds. I went through a rough time this summer and as a result, I didn't go to the gym for over a month, nor did I eat all that healthy. However, as of the first week of September, I've cleaned up my eating habits and gone back to the gym and I'm still not at the weight I want to be. I'd like to lose at least another 7.5 pounds. The fact that I've only lost 2.5 pounds within a 4 or 5 week period indicates to me that the pill is partly at fault as I've been exercising 4 days a week and cut out fast food and a lot of processed carbs. Without the pill, I would be down at least another 2 pounds by now. I'm not about to pressure the doctor to fight the insurance company to switch me back to the brand name Seasonique. I work in managed care, I know for a fact that the insurance company won't consider weight gain a legitimate reason to switch me back. I am thinking of going off the pill entirely when I finish the latest pack I have at the end of November. However, until then, does anyone have any suggestions on how I can lose the weight while on the pill?

Let me ask you this...have you noticed a difference in your clothes? Sometimes you can lose inches and not lose weight. I know when I only have a few pounds to lose I can plateau for a good month to 6 weeks.

What is your diet like? How many calories are you eating etc?

I know BC can cause weight gain...has for me in the past.
are you on bc for true bc or for some other reason that requires it? if you don't have to take bc i say don't.

beyond that, yes look at your diet. i posted recently about metabolic type eating. it's been working for me. it's basically not looking at total calories but the breakdown of your carbs/protein/fat in a way that is in line with your body's metabolism.

I'm not able to fit into some of my clothes now that I used to be able to fit into. I've also noticed that my fat distribution has changed recently. I've always been bottom heavy, but over the last few months, I've noticed that I'm carrying more abdominal fat than I used to. I swear I look 3 or 4 months pregnant. That has to be due to the pill.

As far as diet, I tend to go heavy on carbs, though of late I've cut down on processed ones. Meals high in protein just don't satisfy me for some reason. For breakfast I usually eat oatmeal, cereal (Total, Product 19 or Wheaties usually) or a whole wheat bagel with some soy sausages. My morning snack usually consists of fruit. Lunch is often a sandwich (tuna or turkey) or a salad, with fruit for dessert. My afternoon snack is usually yogurt. Then dinner consists of veggies, poultry or seafood and rice or a sweet potato. I don't eat a lot of red meat or pork. Calories vary from 1200-1800 a day.

Oh, and I started on BC again as my cycle got irregular but right now, I can't deal with the weight gain.

After my expirence last year with Yasmin, BCP is the debbil. But that's besides the point.

Check the side effects of the pill, each package comes with an insert that shoudl list them all. I am willing to bet money that weight gain is on there. Also, generics are different than brand names and often have dyes and fillers that can cause additional weight gain or other side effects.

I am not sure how old you are, but there is a hormonal shift that happens in our 30s and closer to 40s, etc.

Estrogen loves body fat, and body fat loves estrogen. If you have a high percentage of body fat, it can totally mess up your cycle. If you gain weight, it can make it harder to lose it while on or off the pill. It's also entirely possible that your weight gain is water weight.

Re: your diet. Even if a high protein diet doesn't satisfy you, your diet seems high in carbs. I'd write down everything I ate for about a week, maybe 3 to 5 days, and use an app if possible that shows what your nutrient ratios are. You might find that a high fat/protein, low carb diet will get rid of the belly bloat. And when I say fat, I mean GOOD fats. EVOO, nuts (not peanuts), avocados, etc. Lay low on the cereals, they might have vitamins in them but they are highly processed.

Also, don't eat below your basal metabolic rate. Eating less calories CAN result in weightloss, but it's usually muscle loss, which eventually sabotages any weight loss efforts you might have been working so hard at.

Losing weight sucks and not every plan works for every person.

Well, I came in here to give some suggestions, but M2LR covered everything I thought of.

If you're one of those ppl who gain weight on bc, you just will. I don't know how to change that.

M2LR, I was on Yaz first several months last year and I am still waiting for my body to regulate back to normal. Horrible.

I'm too moody and irregular to go off of bc, and I don't like having a period. So I don't know what to do. Other than starve myself, which I would probably lose .5 lbs in a month and die anyway.

eta: your abdominal fat, thing is also true. The other day I was at the mall and I told my mom how the pants fit except my stomach but I was going to buy them anyway, and she said "since when do you have stomach problems" SHUT UP BECAUSE IDK.

I went hard for two weeks working out everyday and eating around 1400 cals, and lost nO weight, you hear me NONE. So I haven't been strict, I still make good choices, have a cheat day, nothing crazy. two slices of pizza big deal. work out 4 x a week. for about 3 weeks now, and I've lost, maybe 2 lbs but not really. Eff. Everyone.

and I feel like I can't say anything because I'm young, but I feel like somethings not right. Because this is stupid.

I went crazy exercising daily and eating between 1000 to 1300 calories a day for 3 months and lost no weight.

I didn't see results until month 4, which is typical for me.

I thought a lot of the weight gain was due to water retention too and I have increased my water intake by one or two glasses a day, but the weight isn't dropping, so I know it's not due to that.

I am careful not to drop below 1200 calories a day as I know it's not safe to eat less than that. I haven't measured my BMR of late but previously, it was around 1700 calories a day. In researching what BCP can do to your body, I found out that they can actually trick your body into thinking you're pregnant and as such, it can increase your appetite and make you eat more. And when your pregnant, your body stores the extra calories in order to nourish the growing fetus. Since it can have that effect, I'm really leery of eating more. I ate 1800 calories one day last weekend and didn't gain, so that's probably the highest amount of food I can eat and not gain. I really am resisting eating low carb because I just don't feel satisfied unless I have them and I know myself to know that I'll binge on them if tried a low carb diet, so I don't do it.

Have you ever been diagnosed with PCOS or had any other ovarian cysts?

I would suggest going to the doctor (Maybe even an endocrinologist. My endocrinologist changed my life.) for a professional opinion. It may not be the birth control at all.

The only birth control that I am aware of that certainly causes weight gain is Depo-Provera (i.e., the shot). I've heard of people gaining 30-60 pounds easily on that.

"In the depth of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer."

I have only used BC when I was taking accutane 12 or so years ago. I had to take it to remain on the medicine. I refuse to ever take it again because of all the weight I gained while taking it. I was able after a while to lose that weight (ha, but I gained it all back after my pregnancies), but I just can't bring myself to ever use it again.

I really hope you're able to figure out how to get the weight off. I'm trying right now to lose weight as well.
What helped me get off the weight was ditching most processed foods, most simple carbs, sugar, and fat. Which means no bread, rice, pasta, potatoes, nothing with more than 12g of sugar per serving (unless its milk or fruit) and watching the fat content. This means I cool like 95% of the food that enters my mouth because no matter how healthy you think the food is, unless you cooked it yourself, you are likely way off on the calorie and fat content.

I think the single thing thy helped was the simple carbs. For me, they cause serious bloating and make the belly fat stick around. I also track my food intake and it really opened my eyes to the little sneaky calories that you eat, don't think about, but that really add up. Maybe try tracking your intake for a week using something like myfitnesspal will help you find those sneaky calories.

Whatever you do, I second going to the doctor and getting a good work up and making sure there isn't anything underlying that might be causing the weight gain.

Good Luck!

I doubt I have PCOS as I don't have most of the symptoms associated with it like elevated blood pressure, increased body hair or so forth. Nor do I have any cysts on my ovaries. Whether I have something else like a thyroid issue remains to be seen. I'd rather be off the pill for a couple of months to see whether or not the weight gain can be solely attributed to the pill or whether something else is going on. I'd rather not do anything unnecessary.
