He's having pain issues. There was a bad experience with a medication patch. He's going back to his usual vet on Monday or Tuesday.

All this is happening while springy and co. have weeks' worth of out of town guests.

(Corrections welcomed if I erred.)

Oh my goodness, y'all are so awesome.

CC, what an adorable little weenie! Such a pretty color.

cyndi, he woke up Wednesday morning yelping in pain, something is going on with his back. We took him to the vet (his normal vet wasn't in so he had to see someone else) and she suggested putting a narcotic pain patch on him and instead of helping he had a negative reaction to it so I had to get that thing off of him. Fast forward to today and he's doing much better and is actually himself again. He was despondent, panting, shaking and wouldn't eat, drink or even use the bathroom and looked terrified and scared and even growled at someone for the first time in his life. I knew to expect him to be different on strong medication, but I knew this wasn't right. I also know when dogs are in pain they can act out in fear of being touched, but he's been through this before a few times and was still himself and was comforted by us, not scared of us. I should have gone with my gut feeling at the vet and not tried the patch, but I thought if he's in this much pain and it can help him I should do it.

He's got an appointment with his regular vet Monday afternoon and I'll feel better after she looks him over and advises us on how long he should be on medication and confined to his crate. We've had a lot of company the past two weeks and it's been harder to keep a close eye on him and he's made it up the stairs a few times and jumped on the couch before we could stop him and I think that contributed to whatever is going on now and irritated the problems he already has.

I knew when he wagged his tail at me yesterday and was excited to see me come toward him instead of looking terrified that he was doing better.

You're a sweet, sweet aunt Deenie, thank you for wanting to know how he's doing.

Speck, he's quite happy to have you rooting for him.

We were posting at the same time, but you got it all right!

There is absolutely no good time for this to happen, but for it to happen while we have company really stinks. I get to watch everyone get ready and head out for the days activities while I'm stuck at home missing the fun. At the end of the day as long as Calvin is doing better it's worth missing though. Yesterday Mr. Spring brought me back some delicious cookies so that helped.

He's definitely back to his normal self! I'm still leaving him crated 80% of the time and continuing the medication until his vet advises us what to do from here. He's not showing any signs of stiffness or pain, but he might still need rest time for a bit. I have no idea what is going on in that little body of his. I've never been so happy to see a tail wag though, I know that.

Thank y'all again for the support.

Calvin sends Gracie and Jed tail wags, sniffs and barks!

He got a great report at the vet! She felt all down his spine and he had no tightness and didn't show any signs of pain and is definitely getting around just fine. Of course he's on a low dose of pain medication so I'm going to take him off that and keep an eye on him, but I think he's good. I guess he just had too much activity the past few weeks with having company here and over did it, but mercy he sure did scream out in pain when it happened and it sure sent me into a panic.

The vet calls it "painful disc" and as long as his neurological functions are all in place when he has these episodes then I can do the same plan of care for him to rest and get back to normal. If we ever stop seeing him have reactions to having his feet pinched or if we fold his foot back and he doesn't correct it then we could have problems. So here's hoping that never happens.

Thank y'all again for the support, it means more to me than you know.

Oh, and WOO HOO I'm doing the happy dance that I can leave the house like a normal person again!
