My daughter just brought home a kitten HELP!

Like Tree18Likes

My daughter's best friend just gave her a kitten from the ASPCA.

1). My daughter (age 20) has never had a pet.

2). I have had pets, they were all dogs. I know nothing about cats.

She is a Bengal Short Hair mix. 8 weeks old.

Any suggestions/tips are greatly appreciated.

texture - medium/fine, porosity - low/normal, elasticity - normal
co-wash - NaturelleGrow Coconut Water or Marshmallow Root, Slippery Elm Bark & Blue Malva Cleansing Conditioners
LI - KCKT mixed w/ SM C & H Curl & Style Milk
DC - NG Mango & Coconut H2O or Chamomile/Brdck Root
Gel - SM souffle (winter), KCCC (summer) or CR Naturals Aloe Whipped Butter Gel (year round)
Sealers - Virgin Coconut Oil, Avocado butter, Aloe butter
Ayurvedic treatments - Jamila Henna, Sukesh, Aloe Vera Powder, Hibiscus Powder
.

What kind of tips are you looking for..? Are you wanting suggestions on how to have her give it back?
"Life is full of beauty. Notice it. Notice the bumble bee, the small child, and the smiling faces. Smell the rain, and feel the wind. Live your life to the fullest potential, and fight for your dreams.
I'd have her really think about this commitment.. At 20 I can't imagine she will be living at home for TOO much longer, and it is hard to find a place with a cat. Cats can live say 15 years. Does she envision having this little thing for all that time? What about traveling etc?
I got a cat at 25, and when my mom pointed all this out I realized she was right and I found it a loving home as I cannot commit to giving up my footloose and fancy free lifestyle.

When my daughter moves away, Jade (the kitten) will stay with me. He (daughter's best friend) got Jade to be a companion pet for me because I am disabled. He surprised her with Jade, her bought a carrier, the food bowls and the litter box, and the ASPCA has given food and will provide the shots. Obviously she is our pet.

I don't know about kitten/cat behavior. What should I expect? How do I care them other than food and water? Is a cat genie a good investment since I can't clean the litter box?

OMG - she is totally adorable.
2/c and some 3A. Modified CG.
Protein sensitive
Highly porous. Color over grey.
Best 1st day method: Super Soaker
Conditioners: Curl Junkie Beauticurls Strengthening Conditioner,
Deep condish: Curl Junkie Curl Rehab
Stylers: Mix Curls in a Bottle into everything for shine. Terrible pj
Sometimes try roller sets - classic glamor but I prefer my curls.
Every day is a gift
OMG - she is totally adorable.

What a cutie patootie!!!!!!!!!!!
Aww she's precious! Congratulations!

I was born to be a pessimist. My blood type is B Negative.

The first 12-14 weeks of a cats life are when you want to socialize them as much as you can. The more people and the more different types of people you can have around them the better. Make noises if you're a noisy person. Play lots of music/tv. Do what you can to get her used to variety over the next 6 weeks.

When we got our kittens we had two "get to know our cats" parties. Sounds crazy but they met and were played with by so many people that to this day they LOVE people. We also invited (one on one) a friend with white hair, a friend with crazy huge hair, friends with glasses, a friend with a super deep voice and my husbands mom in a wheel chair. We even asked people to come over wearing weird hats so they were used to everything. They are more like dogs than cats. They never run and hide from people like other cats do.

To your other question... I don't know anything about the Cat Genie except for reading the website. It looks really nice but it's pretty big so would never fit in our bathroom. If you can make it work in yours it looks like it would be great to have. You said you are disabled. If you don't mind me asking, do you have someone that comes in to help you at all? The reason I'm asking is that since the Genie is mechanical and you can't really fix it yourself (I'm assuming) it would be great if you had someone that could "maintain" it if there was ever an issue. We had a self cleaning electric one that scooped the poop into a tray. It broke within the first year. We didn't notice for a few days as it's supposed to take care of itself. Ugh that was a gross pile of poo. Mistake!

Wow, sorry that was a book! I hope you have tons of wonderful years with your beautiful Jade!

Cats are pretty low maintenance, just as long as they have food, water and a clean litter box!
She's a cutie!

Are you sure you'll be able to care for her after your daughter leaves? Aside from play and litter box changing cats are pretty low maintenance.

I would google some info on her breed to give you a better understanding of her nature. I would think given that she is young and bred with a wild cat, she may be highly active and might need lots of playtime. Cats also love secure places either high or low and a comfy spot by a window. They are independent too and aren't as needy as dogs.

She is super cute! Good luck with her!

She's darling!

Everyone is correct that cats are pretty self sufficient and really just need food, water and a fresh sand box.

Kittens love to play and can be crazy - they are so entertaining. I wouldn't leave thing out like ribbons or string because Jade might eat them.

I'm so envious of your new little one. Enjoy her!

Another tip is to handle the cat a lot so she gets used to being touched. Some cats get sensitive about their bellies or ears or paws. It sounds weird but I touched the cats all over when they were babies. Now they never bite or scratch anyone.

You may want to consider whether someone will be able to help you out on occasion if you or the cat needs anything. The cat genie sounds amazing. I wish I had somewhere to hook it up in my apartment.

It's true that cats are mostly self-reliant and independent. When Brandi was a kitten, she played A LOT. A LOT!!!!!! Did I say A LOT? I would get home from grad school, play with her for almost an hour and she still had energy to go on through the night--she would jump and run around on my bed when I was sleeping. I had to lock her out of the bedroom for a while till she learned that it was "mummy sleepy time".

All I did was feed her, keep fresh water in her bowl and pick up her poo/change the litter when needed. I tried to walk her on a leash, she didn't like that. And I also tried taking her to petco, she just scratched up my neck the moment we stepped in. Now that there's two (Chui is 2.5), they play with each other and I don't really do much playing with them. Just sometimes like with a laser pointer (they LOVE that). And sometimes I play Ninja Kitty with my Brandi (Chui doesn't get it). It's pretty hilarious. They both talk a lot too.

I brush them to minimize shedding --Furminator is a really cool tool. I have a long and medium hair cat and it works great on both of them

I didn't socialize them much, but they've both visited CA with my family during the holidays.

Jade looks like she has a ton of energy and likes to play. A laser toy is really good as well as little toys that she can bat around with her paw. My cats love catnip, so I get them these little catnip fabric "candy" from our local pet store. The also like wheatgrass, so I have that for them. And for treats they love Greenies.

I don't know if any of this was helpful--it was more of me rambling about my babies than anything else

ETA: Oh and I have a catgenie littler box. BEST.THING.EVAH!!!!!!!

Yes, my kittehs are spoiled little furry beings.
