Magnesium glycinate is one of the easiest absorbed form with minimal gi side effects. Other preferred forms taurate and orotate. I use mag glycinate and mag malate.
Mag citrate can be hard on the kidneys and primarily used as a a laxative so it causes loose bowels at low doses. Magnesium must be started slowly and worked up slowly. I started at 200mg morning and night and see how your body does. Then 200mg in the morning and 400mg at night for a couple weeks and then go from there. I take over 1000mg a day.
A great way to get mag into your body and bypass the GI tract is thru mag oil, spray it on your body, use it in a foot soak or a bath.
I use a form of Co Q 10 called Ubiquinol . From Suzy Cohen- ubiquinol is the downline metabolite of CoQ10. In other words, it’s the biologically ACTIVE version of CoQ10 so it’s stronger, and it slips right into your cells. There is no need to worry about whether or not your body (and your gut) can convert the CoQ10 to it’s active form (ubiquinol)

Thanks! I have tablets that are magnesium oxide and calcium. How would that be?

Likely the calcium is combined with magnesium oxide. The oxide is not bioavailable and you only absorb around 4% For best results, you want a chelated form perferably glycinate, taurate or orotate.
Here's a great blog about blog about mag deficiency
Are You Suffering From Magnesium Deficiency? | CHEESESLAVE
When you take calcium, you need a lot more magnesium but that's not how our diets are set up. And too much calcium depletes the body of magnesium so you need even more. Stress, sugar, lack of sleep also deplete magnesium too. No wonder we're all deficient.
Dr Carolyn Dean is the author of Magnesium Miracle
Great article about calcium
Why I Hate Calcium | Dr Carolyn Dean MD ND
Using oral and topical magnesium is an excellent way to restore the deficiencies. Oral alone will take months but combine foot soaks, baths or spray and you'll build up the stores quickly.

What brand of Mag glycinate do you take?
I've been taking Magnesium Malate for hormonal migraine and fibromyalgia spells. It's not seeming to help that much but I may not be taking enough of it either...probably averaging out at 650 mg/day.

Has he looked into a histamine connection with his cluster headaches?
I get them too and was reading lately that the hypothalamus (mis)signaling for an overly aggressive histamine response is thought to be a factor in setting them off.
A few months ago I tried an allergy pill (for the time in my life, just a basic OTC antihistamine) because I could tell that I had a lot of inflammation going on along with my headache, and it really seemed to help. Last week I tried one again under the same conditions and it didn't net as stark of an improvement (not sure if it matters that it was another brand and likely another dosage), but there was still significant relief.
So I'm thinking there might be something to that theory.

Two years ago I took topiramate and magnesium. Prescription was 150 mg Topamax for six months and Mg as a "complement". I don t know if it was the drug, the magnesium or my own hormones, but thanks God, I haven t had a migraine in almost 2 years!
It s been like a miracle to me. Topiramate do has hard side effects, but to me, it s worth it.

crimson, thanks for all the info, I'll be reading awhile.
I'm curious to know what brands you use also.
I already have constipation issues, so if it relieves that it would be nice.

I was on topamax for my migraines and I must admit that it worked pretty well. I stopped taking it because it was jacking up other things in my body. Ever since I've stopped taking it (I tapered down for those of you worried), my migraines are about the same frequency as when I was taking topomax. Don't know if it was because I was on it so long or if I'm waiting for the slew of migraines that will hit me soon.

This area is under construction as my hair type changed and nothing works well for me. I shampoo, I condition and pretty much have done nothing but chuck my hair in a messy bun for the past oh...year? Yeah, I'm that lazy.
No...going no-poo or CG does not work for me. It leaves me overconditioned and oily in a second no matter what I use, so that's not what's not working.

I made an appointment to see my doctor this afternoon. A migraine woke me up at 2am this morning but I managed to fall asleep again. As soon as I woke up, 4 hours later, I got another one full force. I could barely get my son's lunch ready for school. I got some relief from pressing the pressure point between my right thumb and forefinger. But that only took the edge off. The attack came and went within 20 minutes. I was trying to avoid refilling my meds, but I'm down to 1/2 a Fioricet and I just can't get by on Excedrin Migraine alone. I could take the Vicodin my neurologist prescribed last time, but I hate the way it makes me feel. I hate this.

Thanks, Lolo.
I just got all my meds refilled but I'm going to wait one more day before going back on them. I'm watching closely what I eat today. I just want to make sure I didn't trigger the migraines with all the cheese I ate last night (seven Polly-O string cheese sticks).

I didnt notice a big help until I was taking at least 600mg for while but I do better at 1000mg a day and using the mag oil on painful areas. We burn off magnesium with meds, stress, insomnia, sugar, etc so it's likely not enough. But there are so many factors to fibro. I have a facebook group if you are interested. Lots of ways to treat fibro. Dr Teitelbaum's book From Fatigued to Fantastic was a life changer for me.

Sorry for all the questions, but why the need for 2 different kinds?
Also, I am hypothyroid, but I don't think that should matter.
