The Thanksgiving thread

What are you doing for Thanksgiving? Do you make anything special? Do you entertain at your house? Do you decorate if you do? Are there things you pre make before and heat up that day, or things you save for the day of?

My super crazy self suggested we have dinner here this year. I like a traditional Thanksgiving meal, I pretty much have a plan on what to have, just don't know who's going to make all this stuff!

Thanksgiving is a very big deal in my family. Not everyone can make it for Christmas, so it is the one time that our family is all together. We have ham, turkey, homemade icebox rolls, dressing (as opposed to stuffing), creamed corn, green beans, different vegetable casseroles, giblet gravy, brown gravy, mashed potatoes, pecan pie and pumpkin pie. Some things are made in advance, and several the day of.

*what is wrong with me? I forgot the sweet potatoes
And we do not really decorate. We have a few items to go on the table.
When I hear terms like "hipster" I think, who told cliques they could leave high school??

Our Thanksgiving is dwindling in people. We used to have something like 25 people at our house. Now my mom's siblings and their kids have their own and 2 brothers live out of state, so it's usually about 10 people now...if that.

We go whole hog for Thanksgiving. Turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, gravy, green bean casserole, dressing, other vegetables for those who don't like green bean casserole, homemade rolls and lots of pies.

The mashed potatoes are peeled and diced, then put in a pot of water the night before so that's one less thing we have to worry about. My sister usually brings the green bean casserole so that's one less thing that has to go in the oven. Lately we've been cooking the homemade rolls the day before, too. Pies are also made ahead of time, up to a week before maybe?

The rest is usually cooked the day of Thanksgiving. The turkey usually gets done early, so my dad covers it snugly with a couple towels to keep it warm, then will pop the ham in so we don't have to worry about oven space.

This area is under construction as my hair type changed and nothing works well for me. I shampoo, I condition and pretty much have done nothing but chuck my hair in a messy bun for the past oh...year? Yeah, I'm that lazy.

No...going no-poo or CG does not work for me. It leaves me overconditioned and oily in a second no matter what I use, so that's not what's not working.
We always do thanksgiving with family. My mom always wants to have "lunch" at three, which works for no one (siblings have in laws, kids are starving, babies need naps). Every year I think we should've just gone out of town.
Where can i find pumpkins? I want to spray them white for Thanksgiving table.

With everything going on (with my mom and dad), my sibling (+ kids) are all coming over. We are at 21 and counting. They are bringing 2 turkeys, a ham and 6 sides. I just have to worry about apps and dessert
We go home to Mom's every year. This year my cousin Jim and his family are hosting Thanksgiving. It's a big deal for us because it's our family reunion for Dad's side of the family.

We are united for the first time in, literally, decades. My cousin Jim's wife and one of Dad's brothers didn't get along (and for good reason; this uncle was an ass), so a bunch of the family had boycotted the big dinner. That uncle passed in 2010, so now Jim and his family (and everyone else who boycotted) are back in the fold. We're expecting 60 to 70 relatives from all over the country.

I'm REALLY hoping for good weather so my husband and I can go wander around the farm. We'll also make our annual pilgrimage to Dad's and the grandparents' graves.

I'm excited! And a little sad - my aunts and uncles are all getting so old and that is hard to see.

My husband and I hang out together in the morning and then split up on Thanksgiving. He goes to his mom's and I go to my sister's house. It was just easier than leaving his mom alone on a holiday or spending 4 hours on the road driving from one huge meal to another. I usually bake a boatload of pies or bring a side dish. Whoever hosts is in charge of the turkey.

I'll be preparing a side and a dessert as will 6-7 different female cousins. My mom does a couple of different kinds of rolls. Everything is at my aunt's so she does the turkey and dressing. Because we're sexist, the guys buy pop and booze.

We usually eat an early dinner with my mom's side of the family (her in-state sibs & their families, and her dad & his wife) around two or three and then eat a second dinner with my dad's family later that night (all of his sibs & their families) around six or seven. It's a pretty sweet deal! It's a fairly small affair with my mom's family - we all fit (somewhat squished) around an extended dining room table. With my dad's family, though, they have to set up like 7 different tables around the house (each one seats about 6- to fit all of us! Even then, there are usually still people sitting on couches, eating with plates in their laps.

My mom's side usually does a deep fried turkey, which is a delish treat! I hope they do one this year... They didn't last year, and I was pretty mad!

I'm getting a little tired of green bean casserole. Does anyone have a different vegetable suggestion?

I love green bean casserole.

But, last year I made sweet potatoes layered with sliced apples, and then I poured over that a mixture of apple juice, maple syrup, butter, and brown sugar that I'd cooked on the stove.

Then I put it all in the oven.

I got the recipe online.

It was a huge hit.

I was just thinking about this yesterday and thought about starting a thread then promptly forgot all about it.

I've cooked for family the past 8 or so years, but this year it's just us. I still haven't decided what I'll make for us and I guess I should be thankful I won't be spending 3 days exhausting myself in the kitchen making way too much food. I feel a little lost because normally by now I'd be in the planning stages and already buying the non-perishables to set aside. No matter what I'll be making good ole' trashy green bean casserole because Mr. Spring just loves it. I miss my family.

A couple of weeks ago I made roasted apples and sweet potatoes with cranberries and pecans and it was super tasty, so that would be an alternate side if anyone wants something a little different.

We do have plans for Thanksgiving evening because our neighbor has invited us over for dessert. She and her mom make a fresh coconut layer cake and I'm really looking forward to that.

I've decided that I'll never get down to my original weight, and I'm OK with that--After all, 8 pounds 2 oz. is just not realistic.

I don't cook groups of people. Ever. I don't like having a ton of people at my house. I always go to other people's house.

But I'm kind of tired of it. And I'd like the kids to be able to be at home with their own toys and stuff.

There will only be 10 ppl here so it wont be too bad. But I've never cooked for that many people. I'm not that worried about it. I know what I plan on making, when I'm going to be making it and such. Its just the execution - we'll see how it goes!

This will be interesting this year. Mr B and I thought we'd have a quiet day with just the two of us since my folks passed away last year, but his daughter just asked if she & her family could have dinner with us that day. I've never done the turkey myself & it's not that big a deal, I guess it's just the timing of everything. I'll bake pies the day before & will try to do as much ahead of time as possible. The biggest challenge is our older grandson has an allergy to eggs and milk, so I'll have to be creative with sides or make his separately.

I think if I can make or at least prep things like squash, green bean casserole, stuffing - a day or two ahead, I can throw them all in the oven at the same time and they'll be done (give or take) close to together.

I'll just have to figure out how to work in appetizers, and of course the turkey. And then the buying of all this food.

Oh, I will be buying pies. Horrible I know, but I'm not making all the food AND dessert!

Being Italian, my biggest concern is making sure I have enough food!

I know! I always make way too much stuff, but, hey, it's the Italian way.
Usually it's me doing all the cooking. I mean everything, turkey and at least 4-5 sides plus 2 deserts. I love to cook but the holidays always make me think of my father and I like to stay busy so I don't have time to feel sad. I am always very very exhausted afterwards and barely eat what I made. My mom is the only one who helps clean up the kitchen. This year we are doing something different. We are going out to a resturant and let someone else clean up the mess. Afterwards, I will go to my boyfriend sister's house. It will be nice since we usually spend Thanksgiving apart. It will be just as hard for him since he lost his father this past March.

Whelp this is my first vegan thxgiving. So I will be at WF seeing faux meat options since it is a special occasion. I will make my chocolate cake with gonache, maybe an apple pie, wild rice with gimme lean sausage;water chestnuts;and cranraisins, sweet potato casserole, macn"cheese"; and if I could get my cousin to make greens without a neckbone I will be spared but if not, collards all the way. Maybe garlic mashed potatoes. These are always my thanksgiving favorites. I have to cart all this food over to my cousins and have to see where I can set up or if I will be banished to the fridge. Last time I was at another cousins hOuse for Fourth of July and left my potato salad out and lord I come back and folks that arrived after me were attacking it. I told them it was vegan and they were dropping their jaws.
