I just learned the word "paling." It means a fence with pointed wooden or metal stakes.

Seems like a pretty simple word and yet I never heard of it before!

I love words. I get different "word of the day" emails from various dictionaries. I also belong to Toastmasters and every meeting someone is in the Grammarian role. The Grammarian introduces a word, and we each try to work it into our presentation or speaking role.

We have Captivate displays in the elevators at work and today the word of the day was parergon.

The Captivate words crack me up because the sentences they use them in almost never give any sort of context to what the words means.
