Question for those of you who knit AND crochet

I would like to teach myself to knit or crochet but don't know which would be easier to start with. Also, what is the difference between the two? Thanks!
knitting involves two needles......?

crochet is done with a single hook, knitting is done with two needles, or circular needles. On the whole, crochet is somewhat quicker, but I believe knitting is more versatile, and since it is "trendier" right now, there is a lot more great stuff out there for knitters. I am currently teaching two crocheters how to knit, because they see how much more there is for knitting!
The main problem I have with crochet is trying to get the edges straight. It does go much quicker than knitting, though. A few weeks ago I whipped up a cool pink scarf in an hour while watching a movie! (I used THICK yarn) It seems, though, that you can do more with knitting.
I think to an extent it depends on what kinds of things you want to make.

Many of my friends who do both tend to knit when they want to make garments - sweaters, tops etc... because there are a lot more trendy patterns for knitting. But for scarves and afghans and decorative items, crocheting is so much faster and I think allows for a bit more creativity.

I can't get the hang of crochet, but I'm a good knitter. I'm also a leftie, and I think that has something to do with me not being able to wrap my head around crocheting (I was trying to learn from my rightie MIL).
I'm having a crochet lesson tomorrow at my local yarn shop...I'll come back here and report back after. I tried to teach myself how to knit by using the Debbie Bliss book "How to Knit" and I found it frustrating...for knitting I really needed someone to show me what to do.

See, I think that's my problem....I need someone to SHOW me. I bought a kit at Walmart that has some hooks and a book called "I taught myself to crochet". I THINK I have figured out the chain stitch....I dunno.....I made a really long chain of something! But then when I get to the part where you make a single crochet, I can't tell where I'm supposed to hook the dang thing. Grandma is coming for Christmas, so I'm hoping she can help me out. Right now I'm just really frustrated. I'm not a stupid person, but I can't figure this out! And that really ticks me off!

It is much easier to learn how to crochet when someone teaches you. I was taught how to this summer by a friend and when you see someone else do it, it is a whole lot easier than trying to learn from a book. I used to know how to knit when I was younger, and I don't remember finding it difficult. But, I don't remember how to do it now!
