Florida reform school--more graves found
Has anyone been keeping up with this? I only learned about it today. I'm not sure about reading any of the books written by former inmates.....not yet. What personal accounts I've already read were very upsetting.

I read an article yetserday but before that I hadn't heard a thing.
I tried to read an official document of some sort, but it froze my computer. I definitely will be informing myself more about this story. Poor children. |
That makes me sick.
|
How have I never heard of this? I could not get the link provided to open so I read a story from the UK daily mail. JC! Pictures of the grave sites gave me chills. That is grotesque.

Wow. so sad. and some of the comments, wow people are so sick
|
I hadn't heard of this & find it extremely disturbing.
|
I just watched a NPR video on you tube and noticed that the suggested videos hardly had any views. 100, 300, etc. the most I saw was 5000 one one. It is odd that books have been written, stories have aired, but it doesn't seem to be widely known.
I was curious about how many of these kids who were buried there might have been orphans. I am sure not all were, which makes you wonder... That is so sad. |
STFU, that is freaking sick. I have never ever heard of this place or the atrocities. I can't imagine how awful it was (I envision the old time mental facilities along with old time prisons)...and it was running until 2011?! WTF?! How does this ish not get caught over 100 years?
|
I heard about it for the first time yesterday. It's very disturbing.

i cant get over that there are people who doesnt beleive it happened. Its not like this school had a spotless record and all of a sudden these down in out men has come out of no where to make these claims. their have been a record of abuse. they wer investigations at the time people claimed no abuse was happening. their were adults at that time reporting these things. this whole story is shocking and appalling. I'm thinking we havent heard baout this because they were so good at covering it up.

Omg!!!
The more I read, the worse it gets. I read that allegations began only a year after this place opened??!!! Tribune editorial: Unearthing a shameful past at Dozier School | TBO.com Re: The comments below the article about local residents loading up guns and hounds to help hunt down the runaways.....I wonder is it true? But how could it not be? One of the schools VERY OWN RECORDS lists a dead boy as being found under someone's house with gunshot wounds. I also read in another article about locals being allowed a cut of the supplies/provisions provided to the school. Many, if not most, of the children were Black, so I'm sure that played a role in the general indifference. Just horrible :( |
And another thing about those who doesn't believe the victims. How do they explain the unmarked graves? why leave them unmarked? why have no record of them?
There is no way the town was unaware of the things going on. i wouldnt be a bit surprised if they were profiting from the place being open. now that the grits are hitting the pan, they are claiming they knew nothing and nothing bad ever happened and the victimes are liars. shame on them all! |
i'm reading this now and it all sounds so familiar - does anyone know if there was a documentary or something on this?
ETA: I also find this very disturbing. I work in Alternative Education and this hits close to home for me |

I find it hard to believe that no one in this town heard rumors or tales about the infamous "school" it had been around since 1900 and as soon as it opened it was under investigation. But the town doesnt want the school to close and doesnt want a memorial for the victims. why? I'm not saying the whole town was in cohoots to keep this place open, but I find it strange that the people seem up in arms about the victims coming forth and telling their stories. the artical sinistral read seems very plausible. the town could had been getting something out of having the school there. now they are afraid everything will come out and ruin the good name of their town. |

Prisons are big employers, so yeah, I guess I can see why they would want it to stay open. And I guess some of the gaurds who tortured the kids would be residents of the town. Yeah, I guess it makes sense. |
Oh yes!! The hunting down of the boys! How extreme was that? There were boys who were shot down like animals. If i lived there, I would wonder why they felt these boys were so dangerous they had to hunt them down like harden criminals, but yet have no barracades keeping the general public safe? I would had begin questioning things like that for the safety of my family. But yet, no one did. I find that strange.

I'm just thinking about the alleged murders. I would be stunned if the locals knew about and condoned that. |
