questions about pain meds and drug tests
My foot is not much better. It is achy and throbbing most of the time and sometimes it has sharp, stabbing pain. So I schedule the follow up appointment with the foot surgeon. He cannot see me until Monday afternoon. The anti-inflammatory prescription I got on Saturday is gone; it was just a 5 day supply. I have called the primary care clinic where I went Saturday to ask for them to call in a new pain prescription and I had to leave a message. I am ready to lay in the floor and cry now. I am at work and flipping miserable but I cannot not be here for the next few days.
I have left over narcotics from a year ago. If I take them even though the prescription is over a year old and should I be drug tested, will an old prescription cover my tuckus or can it cost me a job?????

Read this.
(I'd call my dr and get a new scrip.)

Thanks. I called at 8 am this morning and had to leave a message; I have heard nothing back. I am getting desperate. Dr. #1 thought Dr. #2 would see me yesterday or today and that is just not the case here in Reality-ville.

Call both doctors and if you reach the service or leave a message say that it is an emergency. Drs. worry about being sued - you will get a call back quickly. Keep calling every hour if necessary. Don't worry about being a pain in the a&& or a pest or anything like that.
My dad was a dr.; my mom was a nurse. I'm usually timid but I know from what they told me that this is no time to be timid. CALL!
ETA: Have them call the pharmacy with a new scrip.

Multiple calls and messages, no response. I am eating Aleve almost like MMs.

My doctor used to tell me to alternate my "drugs." She told me to take ibuprofen (in your case Aleve...and you can take 2 at a time, max 4 per day), then take tylenol 2 hours after the ibuprofen (or Aleve). She then told me to just rotate the pills I'm taking every 2 hours. Ibuprofen, Tylenol, Ibuprofen, Tylenol, etc.
With Aleve, I think I took the Aleve, then took tylenol 2 hours later and took tylenol every 4 hours after that. And then taking Aleve when the next dosage was due.
It worked pretty well for me.

This area is under construction as my hair type changed and nothing works well for me. I shampoo, I condition and pretty much have done nothing but chuck my hair in a messy bun for the past oh...year? Yeah, I'm that lazy.
No...going no-poo or CG does not work for me. It leaves me overconditioned and oily in a second no matter what I use, so that's not what's not working.

I am angry that you are in pain and getting no response. That sucks.
Is there any other medical facility that you can contact? If you have insurance, some of them have an R.N. on call - perhaps that person could make a suggestion.
{{{GoldenCurly}}} Hugs for comfort.
Are you able to wet your foot (I don't know the history)? Heat - soaking in hot water?
Stay in touch - we are here for you.

I hope you got a response from your dr by now.
I use 800mg ibuprofen every 4-6 hrs as needed for acute problems in addition to other meds. Or naproxen sodium (Aleve), I can take around 1500mg a day.
Other things that may help
Epsom salt soak several times a day (I hate soaking so I use magnesium oil)
Rubbing bio freeze or tiger balm on the area a few times a day
TENS unit (can you borrow one)
Elevate
Ice
Corny as it sounds, I like to use binaural beats to help with pain.
From Dr Tennant
CRITICAL INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO TAKE THESE PAIN RELIEVERS
1. Take Ibuprofen and Naproxen with another drug which I call a "potentiator", since it makes these pain relievers more "potent".
2. Listed here are the potentiators you should try with ibuprofen or naproxen.
Initially try one of each with ibuprofen or naproxen to find out which is the most effective.
a. Acetaminophen - 1 tablet
b. Excedrin® - 1 tablet
c. Aspirin - 1 tablet
d. Immodium® - 1 tablet **
e. Benadryl® - 1 capsule of 25mg
Caution: If any of these cause you nausea, vomiting, bleeding, or black stools, you must stop them. Take an antacid, milk, or Pepto-bismol if you have nausea. Black stools are caused by internal bleeding, and you will need to consult a doctor if this occurs.
** Immodium® is the trade name for loperamide which is the only opioid drug that is non-prescription. It is sold over- the-counter for treatment of diarrhea although it has pain relieving effects when taken with ibuprofen or naproxen. Too much could possibly cause constipation.

crimson - THANK YOU! I will be trying several of those things very soon. I've never heard that about "built up electricity" but it makes sense.
I called the podiatrist surgeon with whom I have an appointment on Monday and told them my meds ran out Wednesday and I have left messages on both the receptionist and the nurse's voice mail, numerous times but no one will call me back. The problem is what I was given is for inflammation flare-ups and cannot be taken for more than 5 days because of the side effects so the pharmacy cannot call them to get it refilled; I have to have a prescription for a different drug. The nurse at the PS office told me she'd call the primary care doc and light a fire under them. She asked what I was taking and I told her Aleve and arthritis strength Tylenol and was still just miserable. She said she would request some heavy duty stuff and she'd call me back and let me know. She said I shouldn't have to go back to them for them to call me something in to hold me over until I can see the surgeon. She was rather pizzed off at them and very sweet and compassionate with me. I actually cried when she told me she'd take care of it.

The nurse at the PS office got my primary care physician to call me in Vicodin! I'd do the happy dance but that's not possible. So I am at work in a narcotic fog but my foot has stopped having the sharp, shooting pain.
:contented sigh:

It's gotten to the point that I can't even take narcotics anymore. Even for legitimate pain haha. It all makes me nauseous and the fog completely knocks me out.
They just don't make drugs like they used to...

I wish something would knock me out! All drugs that should do that simply give me severe adult ADHD and I can't focus or get anything done productively. If I take too much I can knit for 72 hours straight. But that's not wise on many levels.

Lucky! Wait...not so lucky I guess, if it makes you green and pukey.
Narcotics of any sort pretty much don't do a dang thing for me. I could have just as well taken a sugar pill.
I blame a bout with a hernia a couple years back. It took them 2 months to find it and the dr just kept giving me stronger and stronger narcotics. No bueno.

Thank you again for posting this! I have never heard of taurine before but I am ordering some today. It's only about $7 for a month's supply from Amazon so it is definately worth trying. I keep rereading this pdf and am going to start making some small changes that hopefully will improve my chronic pain, not just this tendon issue. I want to hug you! (((crimson)))

Thanks! Yes, it's a torn tendon and soaking it in hot water with epson salt is the best thing EVER. I do that twice a day. I wish I could do it at work! They'd love that..lol!
Today I am home so it's staying propped up and me off it, or it's in a warm soak.

Oh, I'm so glad someone gave you a response!
My work is a non-narcotic workplace, and I had to declare the possibility of codeine in my system when I took my drug test. When I get bad asthmatic bronchitis the codeine cough syrup is the magic elixir for getting me to stop coughing enough to breathe. However, it totally knocks me out, so when the nurse doing my drug test told me I couldn't work on it, I told her not to worry - I couldn't GET to work on it, and had delayed the test until I was well enough to be off it so I could get there. I have trouble walking across a room in one go with narcotics. And apparently I'm quite funny when I try to speak...
This is slightly misleading in that pepto bismol will turn your stool black...

Magnesium taurate is magnesium and taurine and I know many use this with great results. Magnesium makes a huge difference in pain levels but make sure you use the right type. Also make some magnesium oil and spray that on your foot thru out the day. I spray it on any painful area thru out the day. Better than an Epsom salt soak and no water necessary.
The Intractable Pain Patient's Handbook for Survival is a great ebook. Very informative.
I deal with chronic pain and despite having adequate pain meds, I still had pain.... thankfully I have found some great supplements that make a big difference. Magnesium (I use malate and glycinate), D-Ribose and Curamin are excellent. I use several other supplements and meds and my pain levels are generally low with my current regimen.
Supplements do take time to work. Dr Teitelbaum says to give them up to 3 months since it takes time to restore deficiencies and heal the body.
Hope you find something that helps you.
