Default What would you do? Work situation.

My boss is out of town at her BFís motherís funeral. And the accounting department needs her to sign off on some rush invoices that need to be paid. I generally log the invoices into a database so we can keep track of our departmentís spending. Then I pass the invoices to my boss and bug her in a couple days if she hasnít signed off yet. She works hard, probably doing 3 times the work she should do. If I absolutely need her for something, Iíll contact her on her day off. Funerals are where I draw the line. So the rush invoice can wait IMO. And Iím not going to even tell her about it until she gets back, or go through any contortions trying to figure out how to get the invoice to her or how she could get it signed and back to me.

Thatís my take on it. What would you do?

ETA: There's a typo in one of the poll options. I don't know how to edit that.

I can't see the poll because I'm on the iPad app, but I agree with you, and I'd let her know via work email. Then it's up to her if she checks that email or not and if she responds.

I voted "Inform her" etc.

That way you've covered your own ***.

I'd inform her in an email of the situation. I might include a pdf of the invoice so that she can view from her phone if she decides she wants to. And let her decide how to handle the situation. Better to let her make the final call than to have it be a big deal and it be on you.

But that is it.

I voted to scan the invoice and email it to her. She can decide what she wants/needs to do.

If she's off, she's off. I would only email people who are off if they explicitly say they will be checking work email during vacation/off days. I suppose if it's an emergency I would contact them but not if they are at a funeral. I would figure something else out.

I'm not sure rush invoices that need be paid are considered emergencies or what they really are(sorry I know nothing about accounting). An emergency in my world is a client website is down and affecting millions of customers and/or we could potentientally lose a client over it.

I agree 100% with you, TNB. She was approved to take this time off to go to the funeral, right? So the stuff that needs doing should be able to wait or be reassigned to someone else. Is there someone else who has the authority to sign? Like her boss or another supervisor, etc? I don't know the situation on your work, so forgive me if she's the top of the food chain.

Does this invoice require a wet signature or could she sign it and fax/e-mail the signed invoice back to you? I have students nationwide that I need paperwork from regularly. If I need a wet signature, I'll overnight it out to them to sign and enclose a pre-paid overnight envelope so they can mail it back to me quickly without having to come up with the money on their own.

If we can make do without a wet signature, then I usually scan it and send it in an e-mail. Then they can print it out, sign it, and either scan it and e-mail it back to me, fax it, or take a picture with their phone and e-mail the picture to me.

ETA: I realized my post looks contradictory. I don't think this needs to be taken care of while she's off. BUT if it absolutely positively cannot wait and they make you contact her to get it signed, then that's what my different method's were detailing.

This area is under construction as my hair type changed and nothing works well for me. I shampoo, I condition and pretty much have done nothing but chuck my hair in a messy bun for the past oh...year? Yeah, I'm that lazy.

No...going no-poo or CG does not work for me. It leaves me overconditioned and oily in a second no matter what I use, so that's not what's not working.

If it was just a co-worker, I wouldn't bother them when they are off. But a boss is a boss for a reason. IME a boss is someone that is reachable at work and away from work. It sucks, but that is why bosses get a larger paycheck. For the added responsibility.

Besides, funerals aren't all day affairs necessarily. She may have time to deal with work issues for a few moments. Or at least she can be abreast of important issues.

Then again, as a boss, I'd be curious to know why it is a rush. Did they just wait until I was out of the office to remember to pay something or did something unexpected happen.

In any event, my bosses have all been the type that would want an email to know so that they can decide for themselves. Again, there is a reason why THEY are the boss and I'M not.

Also wanted to add:

I would also tell the person telling me about the rush that the boss is out at a funeral. That I will try to get an answer, but to not expect anything until tomorrow.

And then send my email. I wouldn't worry about it after that.

Only the owner and I wouldn't ask him to do it either. Problem is, the boss never told us when the actual funeral was. It's bad timing that the death occured around the holidays (makes the memories even sadder, I think, and I definitely didn't want to bug her during or around the funeral). She was planning to be out from Christmas through New Year's, and the funeral was some time in between. I'm just going to leave the invoices for her to sign when she gets back on Wednesday.

Thanks, all.

She's the boss, so part of her responsibility is to keep in touch with the office when she is gone, which isn't really hard these days with internet, smart phones etc. If she is really busy/grieving etc. then she has the option to not check e-mail or not respond, but as an employee, I would let her make that call, not me.
