What price range and style (Scotch, Irish, etc.) did you have in mind?

Glenlivet XXV, Glenfiddich 30 year single malt, Chivas Regal 25 year old, Crown Royal XR LaSalle

That's for starters. I hope it helps. I have whiskey drinkers in my family.

My husband drinks Scotch. I usually get him a bottle once or twice a year, for occasions like his birthday or Father's Day.

I think his favorites are the Islay whiskies, including Lagavulin and Laphraoig. But he recently got a bottle of Ledaig, which is from a different region, and liked it a lot too.
Go for a single malt scotch.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I had no idea what I was looking for but something nice and different, I saw the Glenlivet and Glenfiddich ones but they didn't have a small size. I didn't want to get a full bottle since it's just a little gift. I ended up getting a small crowne royale black, not that exciting or that different, o well.
i'm like thelio, i prefer Irish or American. but when i get *really* sick, i'll get a bottle of Canadian Club and mix it with hot ginger ale and honey to help me sleep!

What's your price range?

Since you said something different:

If non GMO corn is your thing, try Four Roses.

If you want something off the beaten path, try Garrison Brothers, which is made in Austin, TX

If you want a cult-status bourbon, try Pappy Van Winkle (pretty impossible to get, but well worth it if you can)

If you want a decent "gift quality"/"company's coming" whiskey, Woodford Reserve, Glenlevit, Glenfeddich will work.

Seriously though, I have tried homeopathic remedies with various other whiskeys/liquors and nothing has matched it. If I can not shake a cough after pneumonia, I drink moonshine. it's gone the next day. Sure, the good stuff (batches of over 100 proof made by true craftsmen) is illegal, but it might take the feds over 40 years to build a case against them Make crap and you're busted in a week by the locals. The legit distillers know that even the most anti alcohol people you could ever meet have a quart jar of white lightening, for medicinals.

Lol. * To elaborate on that, most grandma's would pinch your nose and stick a tbl spoon of it in your mouth. It's a way of life here. It is also frequently used, in small amounts, for girls who have delayed or inconsistent periods. It's used for many things.* They don't make it, but they will give you a shot glass if you are sick. I personally do not drink it for sport.

Taste varies, depending on the distilling process. I have had some white lightning that had no taste what so ever. It was so smooth. It looks like water and majorly warms you up when it goes down. Some have the taste of rubbing alcohol. I hold my breath and gulp. Lower quality, which you want to avoid, has a weird taste or color.

I don't find it to be all that bad. Some people have over the top reactions when trying it.

Personally, I find the fact that it is illegal to be B.S. Yes, they need to stop the ones who make it in a sub standard way, and stop them. Some essentially make poison, but the fact remains that this is a tradition/trade that has been handed down from generation to generation in my area. It is used in many different remedies, and for awhile was the only way some could make money here. As with anything, some go overboard, but when used in moderation, it is good stuff.
