Tell Me About Your Commute

Like Tree11Likes

Mine sucks and I want to feel less alone.

I live in San Francisco and have a car, but driving to work everyday it's far too expensive because I have to pay for parking.

That means I have to rely on the public transportation system, MUNI, which is slow and unreliable. When they're isn't a breakdown, derailment, or emergency, it takes me an hour door to door, traveling about 7 miles. If something hits wrong it can (and has) take 2 hours.

Yes, I'm kvetching. But it really does suck! Hmph!

What about your commute?

I live 3.5 miles away and only get bad traffic Thursday and Friday afternoons. Normally it takes 30 mins door to desk. it's about a 10-15 minute commute and a 10 minute walk from my parking deck to the building.
Mine is about 35 minutes on a good day. I too take public transportation but I don't have a car. I have to take two trains-one of them is good, but the other one is unreliable. I'm late once every other week on average.

I only live three miles from work. On a normal day it takes me longer to walk from my parking spot to my office than it does to drive from home to my parking spot! My husband drives about four miles to work.

I've never had more than a 30 minute commute.

I drive 35 minutes to school each way, Monday - Thursday. It doesn't sound that long, but it does get repetitive. I like to get audio books from the library, which I should really start doing again! They help a lot.

Work is only about 6-8 minutes from my house (depending on traffic), which is a nice break.

I work about 20 mins. from home. I live right by the expressway and when I get there, my job is right off the expressway. Pretty convenient. My husband sometimes drives me (its downtown so no street parking) or I can take the train which would take me about 30 minutes (2 trains). I ride the trains and buses for free because I work for the transit system....Ironically, I hate taking public transportion! Lol

I live in El Granada and commute to Burlingame. It's a fair stretch (I am assuming you know where I am talking about), but it involves driving along the ocean, through the hills, past the reservoir, and I am almost guaranteed a gorgeous sunrise along the way.

So, it's more of a commute than I wanted, but I don't mind it so much.

My commute sucks but it mostly sucks because people out here don't know how to drive.

I leave by 6:15-6:20am and get to work around 7-7:10 but only because I take some back road halfway through my commute to get on to the parkway. It would take longer if I didn't. I have to be at work at 8am but I leave early because I refuse to sit in traffic caused by people being stupid.

Coming home is a different story, I leave at 5:30pm and don't get home until nearly 7, 6:30 if I'm lucky.
Turtles: omg please don't put that in your moo moo

I live about 5.5 miles from work. All country road, no traffic, no public transportation.

I ride my bike to and from work during daylights savings time. Once or twice a year I will swim home from work It's about a 2-mile river swim (one-way).

I live about 4 miles from my workplace, and it would be a 10-minute or so drive if I were going directly there. But, I have to drop off/pick up my kids from two different places (preschool and school), so it's more like 45 minutes, counting walking the kiddos in, etc. But the upside is that my DH and I work at the same place (different departments of a university), so we usually drive in together.

When the weather is nice during Daylight Saving Time, I bicycle in and let DH drop off the kids. Then he bikes home and I pick up the kids. It's a nice system.

I don't commute anymore, but I used to take the Seastreak ferry - the one that crashed into Pier 11 today. It sucked. It was like a 15 minute drive to the ferry, then 45 minutes on the boat and then a 5-10 minute walk to my office. Plus I had to build in extra time to park and make sure I didn't' miss the boat so it was like an hour and a half door to door.

When I lived just a few miles from the city in Hoboken I used to take the bus from my corner to the PATH and then walk. That was about 45 minutes door to door.
If you got nothing to bring to the table - don't even bother sitting down.
I just looked it up on google maps and I live 3.5 miles from work if I were to walk it (which, seriously, I never will), but 6 miles driving (darn city roads). I share a car with my boyfriend, but neither of us drive to work regularly because we'd have to pay for parking. Although, we could get monthly parking passes that aren't TOO expensive, but the problem is parking at home after work, as we only have street parking and it can get really tough from 6pm on to find a spot.

I take the bus to the train. On a good day it's 30 minutes door to door, but I always give myself an hour just in case I have to wait more than I'm expecting. I have an iPhone app that tells you when the bus is coming, which has made waiting for the bus infinitely better. And the trains come often enough that it's not a big deal.

I live about 25 miles from work - pretty much all highway driving. It takes me about 40-45 minutes to get to work (leaving at 615am - if I leave later it makes the drive much longer and I'd rather get to work 30 mins early than sit in traffic). Going home, if I leave right at 4 when I get off, I can make it in about 30 minutes, sometimes a bit less.

Those are assuming there are no accidents or other traffic issues.
I really don't mind the drive home but the drive to work annoys me most mornings - BUT I really like living where I live so the drive is worth it to me.

First, I drop my daughter at school and my son at pre-school, then I go thru the Starbucks drive thru, jump on the freeway and drive 17 miles downtown. Then I park my car on the top level of a very tall parking structurem make my way down to the 1st floor and walk three blocks in an enclosed walkway that lets out half a block from my office building.

It takes me way too long and, btwn gas and parking, it is way too expensive.

I arrive at work feeling spent.
3b (with 3c tendencies) on modified CG

It takes me about 40mins, if traffic is good.

I've been late because of accidents, or weather (or once because my windshield wiper fluid ran out and I didn't have any more), but I usually try to leave early.

If I get the job I just interviewed for, it would be a 30 min commute.
Drive to train station - 10 min
Train to downtown - 15 min
Walk from train station - 5 min

On the days when I can't get to the station by car, the bus ride is 20 - 25 mins long.

I wish I stayed closer to work. I once had a coworker who walked from his apartment (about 10 min) every morning.
