help with depression
I have a lot going on right now that is dragging me down. My foot is in constant pain and I get so tired so easily now. I cannot exercise easily with the cast and boot so my stamina is deteriorating. I know it's because my fibromyalgia is flaring up because stress makes it worse and so does other health issues. I am also in the process of losing my job because the company was bought and I was not hired by the new company - I'm only staying to close out the original company's books and then I am out of a job.
I need help with natural remedies for depression. I know I can go back on prescription meds for the depression but I will do that only as a last resort; it's too hard coming off of them for me to start them until other things have fallen flat.
Also, I know exercise will help depression so and recommendation for possible exercises I can do without putting any weight on the bad foot would also help .
Thanks in advance.

I take 5htp and it helps me a lot. I take 50-100 mg daily before bed. Been taking it for years. It's quick acting, not like the normal 4 week build up for SSRIs, but I can usually tell in a day or two.

Can you swim with the foot issue? Is there a place nearby and would you enjoy that? It wouldn't put any pressure on your foot.
As far as the depression, I'm afraid I don't know of any natural remedies, except extra rest, talking to friends (incl. us) and trying to do things you enjoy. Now is not the time to be too strict with yourself. Save that for when you are feeling stronger.
I hope your mood lifts soon.

Swimming is an excellent idea, if possible.
Is there anything you love to do that doesn't involve putting stress on that poor foot? Does knitting relax you?
My husband finds that deep breathing/relaxation techniques work.
I am sorry you are going through this. Please take care of yourself.

I don't know of any natural supplements for depression, but I do know my mood is markedly improved when I'm eating better and staying hydrated througout the day (lots of water!). I personally feel my best on whole, non-processed foods-- real meat, seafood, grassfed butter and oils, fresh veggies and fruits, nuts and nut butters, etc.
Also wondering if yoga is an option? That was also a mood lifter for me.

Fish oil helps. So does b vitamins because they give energy.
I take wellbutrin, 300mg every morning. It surprisingly does help me a lot. SNRIs and SSRIs gave me too many awful side effects and Wellbutrin has (for me) none, except insomnia (which can be solved by taking it when you wake up and not at night).
And I second the yoga. It does wonders.

I do yoga regularly, see if you can find s restorative class or a chair yoga class, those should be easy on your foot

What about exercises with that big ball? Can those be done with an injured foot?

I cannot swim in the cast and I live in a very rural area that barely has yoga classes and sadly no restorative ones
I am to be on it as little as possible and keep it elevated 90% of the time. Sooooooo... I lay on my back and keep it up either on pillows or up the wall. I lift weights on my back and "ride a bike" up in the air and do a lot of stretching that are really variations of yoga poses that I can do on my back, which I am sure looks ridiculous: inverted cat, cow, crow, chair, etc. (why do all of those start with the letter C?) Anyone know any specific poses I could adapt and do in the floor or bed or a chair without having my foot downward?
I also have caught a virus and just feel like crap and I know it's because I am so stressed out and my body is fighting so hard and I'm just exhausted. Everything I do just wipes me out. I'll be going along and feel fine and all of sudden I just get weak and have to lay down.
My latest love affair is with those electric shopping carts I can ride in Walmart. There is no way I could walk through the store and push a cart to get groceries. How pathetic is that??? I used to walk a mile a day and now I can barely walk with a cane.
I need to meditate too as well as pray. I will look into stuff with the big ball; I have one of those! I will look into the 5htp. I would LOVE to swim but that's not possible. Heck, I'd love to take a bath and get my foot wet!

I'm sorry, golden.
Winter is such a rough time to feel less than 100 %.

Years ago St John's Wort and SAME were natural depression remedies that were popular. Does anyone here have any experience of knowledge of either one?
They have depression support groups out there that could possibly help. I have had some negative experiences with most therapists but if you find a good one especially one that uses cognitive behavioral therapy that might help. There are also self-help books out there for depression that you could explore. Maybe go to Amazon and see what they have. This is a great book on depression The Noonday Demon: An Atlas of Depression - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I do think the author took meds but you could still get much out of reading this book. He writes beautifully.

golden, google "yoga while sitting in a chair" -- bunches of stuff came up, and there will surely be something you can use. Sorry you're going through this. We will try to be as entertaining and uplifting as possible.

Not sure the big happy ball will work after all (I just tried it myself). There's some upper body while the rest of you is on the floor stuff, though.
NB: the ball itself is fun. Makes one feel pleasantly silly. If it wouldn't have totally disrupted things, I'd have whipped it at the dogs in play. Fang, puncture, hisssss: no more ball for Claudine.

Knitting (or was it crocheting?) tater tots is very relaxing.
I don't know if there are any pilates moves you can do while laying down with your leg up, but you could look into that in addition to the yoga.
I wish I had more suggestions, I hate that you're dealing with all of this. If I were closer I'd go grocery shopping for you.

I've decided that I'll never get down to my original weight, and I'm OK with that--After all, 8 pounds 2 oz. is just not realistic.

Are there any Sit and Be Fit or chair aerobics classes on cable On Demand? Would self meditation podcasts help?

More poses you can do while laying down/mostly horizontal or seated:
- supine pigeon
- seated forward bend
- seated spinal twist
- supine spinal twist
- cobra pose
- bow pose [if you cast doesn’t get in the way]
- boat pose —*You could really build up your core during this time, and that's where most of your strength comes from in yoga anyway. What an opportunity! The cast will add extra weight, which means by the time it comes off, you’ll be ahead of the game.
- you could try learning some new inversions, using the wall for support
- fish pose
For natural depression remedies:
- I second the 5-HTP recommendation. It’s what I took when I got off SSRI’s years ago. I still sometimes take it when I need help.
- In wintertime, a Vitamin D supplement is a good idea. Look on the label and then double the dose.
- Second the rec for fish oil
- Second the rec for a B-complex, it will help your energy levels
I hope you feel better real soon!

I'm glad you responded here because I've been taking magnesium glycinate since it came up in the migraine thread. It's been 1.5-2 months and while my fibro flare-ups have still been intense, I've been more energetic on the whole. And I've been in better spirits. I'm not sure if that's due to having more energy or not, but just feeling healthier on that note--vitality, is invaluable.

I read the link with info by Suzy Cohen and decided I would get this: Amazon.com: Thorne Research - Deproloft-HF - 120 caps: Health & Personal Care
It has these listed as ingredients:
Two Capsules Contain:
Vitamin C (as Ascorbic Acid) 250 mg
Vitamin B6 (as Pyridoxal 5'-Phosphate) 5 mg
Folate (as L-5-Methyltetrahydrofolate from L-5-Methyltetrahydrofolic Acid, Glucosamine Salt) 400 mcg
Vitamin B12 (as Methylcobalamin) 550 mcg
Pantothenic Acid (as Pantethine)* 130 mg
Iodine (as Potassium Iodide) 68 mcg
L-Tyrosine 200 mg
5-Hydroxytryptophan 50 mg
Eleuthero extract (root) (Eleutherococcus senticosus) 50 mg
Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid (GABA)** 50 mg
Rhodiola extract (root) (Rhodiola rosea) 50 mg
You take 4 a day, so the bottle is a one month supply. It's cheaper than what my co-pay would be on prescription anti-depressant on my policy. I also ordered magnesium chloride to make magnesium oil.
I did the chair routine that was linked above and I am going to try to get some sleep now. This is day 5 of running a fever even though I am taking 4 Aleve every day to ease the pain in my foot. I wonder how high it would be if I weren't taking Aleve??? If I cannot sleep, I will look into downloading meditation podcasts.
I also dug out my stretchy bands from PT and will see what I can do with them as well later on.
Thanks everyone. I still feel like poo but it's nice to know I am trying to help the situation and that the curlies care
