Yeah, I don't know why, I do find other people's lives interesting! (and their idiosyncrasies)

I think I may be afraid of what might pop out if I open my mouth. It would probably sound something like, "Hey, Crazy Person! What's going on with those Omaha Steaks?"

So here's a question:

If her pattern is to order food and let it sit out for 7 days (which I have now seen happen four times), would you (general you) REALLY take her food when the next box arrives?

No. Who are we supposed to be? Robbin Hood? LOL That would be (borderline) theft and really obnoxious IMO.

I don't think it would be out of the question to ask for the stuff, tho.

before just taking it, i would try to get her to hand over the box. i dont eat beef, but i know a lot of places who would appreciate it. if i couldnt get her to give me the box. i would take them. she's letting them go bad so no one can eat them. can't fit them in her apartment because she got too much stuff? first world problem! no empathy from me! the homeless in dc would be eating steak tonight if it was up to me.

I don't eat meat at all so it's worthless to me. But so many people were saying it, it made me wonder if people would ACTUALLY do it.

hehe... it's UPS.

Funny thing is, I see her nearly every day and say hello or she'll pet my dog, etc. But I just can't get myself to bring up the elephant in the room.

What if your dog "attacked" the box? you cant be blamed if steaks go all over the place and you don't want to leave them lying out in the hall. so you left her a note saying what happened. she can come get them or not. then when she doesnt take them to the homeless. if she does, tell her that its not a good idea to leave the box out like that, and you can bring it in for her. this can start a conversation about why she keeps them out and then throw them away.

Maybe you could say you've got a friend who thought about ordering from them and you were wondering her thoughts on the food she's gotten from them so far? And how long does that dry ice in there last since it's out in the hall for so many days.

I'd never actually take the food (I love to joke about it though). I absolutely hate to see food go to waste, but the bigger picture is that it's not mine to do with what I want and just because she's wasting it, that doesn't give me free license to just take it. If I want to feed someone less fortunate I'll donate my own money.

If this food was wasted on a regular basis, and I felt I couldn't ask the neighbor for it, after awhile I think I would have to take it. I just wouldn't be able to stand it.
I don't care how crazy she is. It's terrible to throw that food away all the time.

But what if it wasn't food but drugs or some other contraband that was changing hands? Or what if the food was tainted or expired and you gave it away and ppl got sick? Why get caught up like that?

From what I hear, restaurants and supermarkets discard TONS of food a month. Prbly better sources than outside some dotty old broad's apt.

I don't see it as all that risky. I live in a small town. I won't be going to jail for taking a box of meat that's been sitting out in the hallway. And if I open the box and it's drugs instead of meat, I'll put it back. And call the cops.

I know lots of people and other places waste food. But in this case, they aren't my next door neighbor. Actually my next door neighbor is a soup kitchen so I know the need for things like meat.

I wouldn't touch her orange bucket or doo-dads tho.

Okay:

When we lived in Chicago, my ex-h. used to complain and complain about how our annoying neighbor (who was always bragging about being post-grad, whatever that meant) would leave her NYT sit, unread, all day every Sunday. So, one Sunday, he waited until noon, and then took it and read it. He put it back afterward, but it wasn't folded as perfectly, or whatever.

So "post grad" posts a BIG sign in the mail area, complaining about how her paper was "tampered with." And she stopped leaving it around all day. And ex-h. decided it was boring to read three newspapers, even once a week.

Problem solved.

Heh, this is me and my husband... sort of. When I buy a bunch of bananas and don't eat them all before they go too ripe (not moldy, just riper than I'll eat), I stick them in the freezer. When I have enough in there, I defrost and make banana bread. One time, my husband had an incident with the freezer (all the stuff came tumbling out because it was overloaded/not organized -ehem, HIS FAULT-) and he THREW AWAY MY BANANAS. LOL, I was so mad at him.
