Filing taxes online. What do you use?

For many years now I have been using H&R block to do my taxes, but the excessive fees are killing me and I think it is best to do it myself online. I only have basic stuff to claim (house, kids) along with an additional small amount of tuition and my husband's military retirement check in addition our regular paychecks, so my needs aren't too complicated. I am just worried about doing it myself and messing up or something.

So anyway what type of site or program do you use? Is it easy and straightforward? My friend told me that she uses H&R Block's free online file to claim her federal and uses that to estimate her state taxes, cancels the state, and then files on the state website for free. Sounds like too much work for me

Turbotax online
Your tax situation doesn't sound like it's too complicated or difficult. You should be able to do your taxes on Turbotax in an hour if you have all your paperwork together.

Yes all my forms have come in so I am all set to claim.

My husband seems to think that the cost of using H&R block and having them hook you up with additional deductions balances out the fees. I beg to differ. Our fee is like 500 bucks. I doubt they are hooking us up that much.

Also in addition to my question, how long does it take to get your refund back? I was told it was around 7-10 days for federal.

I use TaxAct online, the free program for federal and we don't file a state since Mr. Spring is a legal resident of FL.

For basic filing like you're doing it's very simple.

$500?????
Turbotax will walk you through every possible deduction.

I normally get a refund within 7-10 days. The IRS is not processing refunds until 1/30, but I got a text message stating my return was accepted by the IRS yesterday.

Turbo tax. I love it & have used it for years.
fine, thin, normal/(low?) porosity. Mod-CG. Usually I can't co-wash more than 1x a week, & sometimes I have to use T-Gel in rotation due to scalp issues.

Co-wash: VO5 Volumizing
Poo: Giovanni 50:50
RO:TN, Nexxus Youth Renewal, Alba Coconut
LI: KCKT
PT: gelatin PT, ION EC
Stylers: Giovanni mousse, TIGI Curls Rock amplifier (a-cone), Curls Rock Strong Hold Mousse
Gels: SCC spray gel

Yeah 500 or in that ballpark. And I swear it seems like the rate goes up almost 100 bucks every year.

I use TurboTax online. What's nice is that it remembers your information from year to year so you don't have to re-enter SSNs, employer ID numbers, etc., if the info is the same. That makes it go pretty quickly.

I'm nervous to do our taxes. Last year we owed about $1200 on federal. After we got over the shock, we changed our withholdings so it shouldn't happen again, but I'm still skeered! I believe in paying what I owe, but I wish income taxes were more straightforward so it wouldn't be a guessing game and leave you with a big unexpected bill.
That happened to us before too sarah. My boss automatically added one while my husband claimed us all and we owed something around what you had to pay. We made doubly sure the following year to add some just in case.

Thanks for the advice all. I think Turbotax sounds like the way to go. Any other advice though is greatly appreciated!

I have used Free Tax USA for the past 3-4 years. It is a so easy to use. It's straight forward and you just plug in the information and it does it for you. I like how it gives me information on if I wanted to itemize or not. It calculates what information you give them and tell you what's the better deal (itemize or standard).

The Federal is free and you have to pay a small fee if you want them to file your state. I have always just filed Federal on this site and go to my State site to file those taxes.

It takes 3-4 weeks to get my check only because I choose the option to get it in the mail. If I chose direct deposit it's like 7-10 business days. I am funny about giving out my bank account information.

I've used FreeTaxUSA for many years. Free, fast, easy, with super fast direct deposit, as tnatural said.
I file state taxes through the state website and local taxes through the company website that handles our local taxes. Both are free.

I've been using TurboTax online for years. When we had rental property, we had a CPA do our taxes. Once we sold the rental, I just took what the CPA did for everything else and popped it into Turbotax. Our deductions don't really change every year, just the numbers.

Well I gave Turbo Tax a try and it was pretty idiot proof and straightforward. It took me a good while just because I have never actually done my own taxes before. I went over it a lot because my rebate was lower than I expected so I was second guessing everything. But I guess practice makes perfect! Thanks all for your help.

I use TurboTax too, and my returns are actually a little more complicated since I run my own business from home. I still find it very easy to use.
I use H&R Block's free online program. I've used it the past couple of years... I like it, and it's pretty straightforward.

Federal is free, but you have to pay to do your state taxes on there... So I opt to use my state's free website for that portion.

If I were you, I would do an experiment, since your tax liability is roughy the same every year. I would pay a self-employed CPA to do your taxes this year and buy Turbo Tax. Then compare both against what H&R Block did for you last year.

H&R Block is a rip off!!!!!!!!! I tried using them once and they were charging me $2100 in fees (yes, my tax situation is complicated) but they were getting me back only about 60% of what my (now) regular tax person got me for $900.

Forget H&R Block plz!!! They suck.

Try a private tax preparer and a software package...you will still save!

I will give H&R Block props for their second opinion/tax check service. I had an IRS volunteer do my taxes last year because I made so little income and was a bit sketched out by their work. I went to H&R Block to get their second opinion and they confirmed what I owed the IRS and didn't charge me for the check.

That said, I almost always do my taxes online unless I have major questions. This year my situation is a little different (untaxed income and estimated tax payments) but I still plan to use Turbo Tax or some other online service to file, provided I don't hit any road bumps.
