Words you understand but find hard to explain
What words do you understand and can use well but find hard to explain or define to others?

This may not be what you mean, but TIME. How would you describe it without using the word itself?

^Google says: the indefinite continued progress of existence and events in the past, present, and future regarded as a whole.
That's a good one.

"Itch" is hard to define.
Google defines it as, "An uncomfortable sensation on the skin that causes a desire to scratch".
To me, that's still isn't saying what an itch is, it's just saying that's it causes you to do something else.
in my skincare book that I have, it still can't explain what an itch is, no one knows what causes it.

Obsequious. It just means what it sounds like to me.

i'm not even getting started. i have a hard time explaining things that should be easy. i would suck as a teacher. alot of times dictionary definitions kinda sucks! you have to look up the definitions of words in the defintion.

Good ones! I made this post when I was feeling kinda sleepy. I was hoping it wasn't one of those topics that made sense only in my head.

I am not good at verbalizing definitions in general, which makes it hard to explain things to my 2 year old... I was trying to explain 'opposites' the other day and was totally stuck on how to do it without using the word 'opposite'.

I just ran into this with the word "esoteric."
I felt like I couldn't explain it without sounding like a snob or an a-hole. Or both.

Good one!
How about love...?
Air/wind, water, fire...the elements are tough too.
Emotions or physical feelings are particularly tough. But there are other non-feeling related words that I've found hard to explain. Of course no others come to mind right now...

Colors. My definition of a color is viewed in a completely different way than most of the people I know.

This area is under construction as my hair type changed and nothing works well for me. I shampoo, I condition and pretty much have done nothing but chuck my hair in a messy bun for the past oh...year? Yeah, I'm that lazy.
No...going no-poo or CG does not work for me. It leaves me overconditioned and oily in a second no matter what I use, so that's not what's not working.

Why, do you have synesthesia?

I think I am pretty good at explaining things but I have tried a few times to explain the difference btwn thinking someone is attractive vs. being attracted to the person...and for the life of me, I wasn't able to get the ppl I was explaining to to understand what i mean.

Actually, yeah, I do! I didn't know there was a term for it. Well, according to Wikipedia, it's pretty much how my brain works. Time is spacial for me. I have to visually go further and further back in my thinking process to remember the time or year or what happened earlier in the day.
When doing math, I have to visualize the problem in my head just like I was doing it on paper.
Sounds are usually associated with a memory, so if I can't identify a sound, I have to search my brain for the memory that corresponds with the sound to identify it (like water, the furnace turning on, someone tapping a pencil on the table, a vacuum, stuff like that). Same thing goes for quotes from movies/books. I have to visualize the scene or which side and portion (top, middle, bottom) of the page the quote came from.
Colors are viewed to me either through a connected memory or visualizing the color wheel. But trying to define a color for someone else is hard because my perception of the color is different than everybody else's. Like my version of fuschia or magenta are brighter than other people's view. Lime green to me is a yellower green than most other people I know. Dusty blue is more grey to me than others.
It's weird.

Interesting, but that doesn't sound like synesthesia, by its strict definition. Maybe it is...But as I understand it, it's experiencing one sense through another sense. For example, one could "smell" or "hear" colors or taste sounds, etc.
