I went with BJs. I went through with a day pass a few weeks back. I saw some stuff that I like and use a lot of (TP, Chobani, dried cranberries, oatmeal).

Thanks for all the feedback. If we had a Costco near me, I would have joined Costco. But driving half an hour or 45 minutes to get there doesn't appeal to me at all. And I know I'd never go.

BJs is like half a mile farther away from me than Sams. Sams is two miles from my place.
you can shop at Sam's without a card. I think it's 10% more. Maybe the person at the door didn't know what they were doing

BJ's usually has 90 free trial membership offers. I would check online and try it out

That's so weird, you can go to their website and print a one day pass to use so I don't know why they wouldn't just let people in and give them the same pass at the membership desk.

They do have one day passes but they only really keep them in store around the holidays. You can print them up or pull it up on Ur phone.

Dumb but looks like we were all right

I always kept BJ's and Sam's. Once we joined Costco, I gave up BJ's. There are certain things I buy at each, that the other doesn't have. If you get the Amex (only credit card that Costco takes) you get % back on all purchases, including 3% on gas anywhere. Makes it worthwhile. Sam's only takes Mastercard, so you may want to take that into your planning.
They also take Discover and they accept my debit card with the visa logo which had to be run as credit.

I have a membership to Costco and Sam's. I only have one for Sam's because it's the inlaws other card.

It's rare I shop Sam's...usually for a few items they carry at Christmas and I like their veggie trays better for kids birthdays.

Costco...we go to at least once a month or every other month. We buy all bulk things...we've bought a t.v.... It's rare I've bought anything I don't like. I drive the 45 minutes to get to a Costco...

I have (had??) a Sam's membership. It was cool when we consumed very large quantities of certain products on a regular basis where a bulk discount would matter. But I just don't like/shop like that now so I rarely go anymore.

From what I keep hearing its on some other levels. Forget thebomb.com, try thebomb.org.

That really depends.

I buy my cheeses at BJs, my organic arborio rice, organic pine nuts, huge bag of King Arthur flour, Annie's mac & cheese, organic cane sugar, evaporated milk & condensed milk (for my husband's flans), dinner rolls, ciabatta rolls, Belgian waffles, gum (my husband), baking soda (for cleaning & cooking) and contact lens cleaner.

My parents pick up cans of San Marzano imported tomatoes & pesto sauce for us at Costco.

I buy most of my groceries at the local stores.

If you were in a wholesale store and someone asked you to swipe your card for them because they left theirs in the car, would you do it?

At the stores that I use (Sam's and Costco), you need to show your card to the person at the door to get in and give it to the cashier to check out. So, this wouldn't happen.

When I belonged to BJ's, you didn't need it to get in. They did have self checkout, so it's possible someone could ask you to do this. The way it's set up, it's unlikely. They'd have to be behind you in line and you would have to stay there to do it once you're packed up and ready to go.

Someone next to me in self checkout asked me to do this. I said no. He returned with his card and said, "I really do have a card, I just forgot it." I was more than a little surprised that he expected me to scan my card upon request.
