It certainly makes more sense than carrying on when feeble.

I wonder if they're looking at nonEuropean candidates to replace him.

Hmmm, I smell a soon-to-break scandal. I can't think of any other reason for this.
Considering how "so what?" the Vatican has been over the sex abuse scandals, whatever's coming must be HUGE.

he always said he wouldnt be pope long. i think he knew soem people really disliked him adn didnt think he was a good pick.
but his excused because he's getting old and health is declining is suspicious. dude before him looked like they had a stick up his back to keep him from falling over. ever see him wave? like a puppet on strings.

Considering he was a member of the Hitler youth, he shouldn't have been there to begin with.

I suspect the HBO documentary Mea Maxima Culpa played a role. It really laid bare the institutional corruption that allowed the abuse to continue. Powerful & infuriating.
Alex Gibney also produced Smartest Guys in the Room (about Enron) and Taxi to the Dark Side (about the use of torture in the so-called "war on terror) which were both excellent.
thelio, I'm with your grandmother. I was so disappointed with the selection of Ratzinger, especially after John Paul II. I loved that man, and I'm not even Catholic!
ETA: (also to thelio) yeah, it was painful to see JPII repeatedly trotted out long after his mental and physical condition had deteriorated badly. I really thought he would be relieved of his duties, as an act of mercy.

That's exactly what I was thinking. They usually serve until their last breath and leave in a pine box. The resignation can' t bode well at all.

I didn't know he was part of this, but I don't think that necessarily should be held against him. If that is the case, there are lots of white Americans who went along with segregation and unjust laws because "that is just what people did back then." my point is that some of us have done stupid things or thought them and then grew up and realized how stupid we really were. Obviously I'm not talking about adults who willingly tortured someone else because they thought they were better than that person and not having to do time for the crime.

I understand that. But for this type of position, there really needs to be a higher standard. This isn't your everyday type of job. He represents an entire religion here.

he was a member of the nazi youth, but in his defense he had to, it was the law. at that time all youths had to join or risk beign labled a traitor and risk death along with his family. He hated it and was not a nazi supporter. he had a relative who was sent to the camps and killed because he was mentally hadicapped or something.

He had to. Yes. But he didn't have to be the pope

All I'm saying is that I don't agree with him becoming the pope. Whether or not other people feel that way too is entirely their choice. I'm not forcing my views on anyone, just stating my opinion

Yes, his cousin was killed in the euthanasia program to test-out their techniques. He had Down's Syndrome. So sick.
I remember when he became Pope...he said that he really didn't want to be Pope, and prayed like crazy to not be elected. Honestly, 7 years later, I clearly remember that and remember thinking the church was in trouble if this was the Pope!

I remember he said he would be pope for like five years or something. I actually feel bad for him. He didn't want the job. He probably knew people didn't want him for the job. At least he got a few years left to go do whatever he has planned.
