We don't need to assume - it's obvious.

I've been away from this thread for a minute, but when did this become a race issue ?
I just can't wait for the trial to begin, the prosecution did a shoddy job this time , I hope they do a better job during the trial proper.

It was a race issue from the start.

Autopsy: Pistorius' girlfriend beaten with cricket bat | Fox News Video
OK so her skull was crushed? HOW did he make bail? Ugh. I'm at work so I can't listen to the audio closely...

Apparently the prosecution didn't mention the bat or the alleged beating she got with it at the bail procedings. The commentator said the prosecution might not have wanted to show its hand that the bat would be brought up later.
(But it's not like it was a secret; reports have been mentioning the bat since the day it happened.)
Well, the strategy backfired and OP (Oscar Pistorius) is free on bail. Personally, I think OP looks like a huge suicide risk to me. I would say flight risk, too, if it weren't for his obvious disability.

Watching the Dateline episode about the case. It seems like Oscar had a serious chip on his shoulder about his manhood and keeping a woman. He also seems paranoid and should never have had a gun. Also, Reeva had been in an abusive relationship, and that is what motivated her to end violence against women.

So it seems he had two watchdogs in his house.
When I had a dog, he would bark uncontrollably if anyone was outside. But he wouldn't bark if I, or a guest, got up to use the bathroom.
I always felt 100% safe in my house, even in the worst neighborhoods, as long as my dog was quiet.
If he didn't hear his dogs barking, why did he think there was an intruder?

Same here! if my dogs were quite, I knew all was well!
this dude was just crazy. he had dogs and a mini arsenal. what more did he need to feel safe? maybe he should have had a body guard.
hopefully he goes to jail and she gets justice. this is obviously murder.

I hesitate to say he's guilty...yet. And I hesitate to pull the race card...yet.
On the one hand, it was South Africa, perhaps the most flagrantly racist country on earth; I'm sure much of life there is tainted by the brush of racism. But on the other hand, men have been killing women since the beginning of time, without regard to race or economics or status.
This kind of case is trickier than say, OJ, bc the question isn't whether OP shot her. The question is why. And it's damned hard to know what goes on in the mind of another person...specially someone else so unlike you.

The "race card" (I hate that expression, LOL) comes from the racism that is inherent in the justice system and in society, there as in any colonized country. The "intruder" defence only works if you accept the racial paranoia that grips a lot of white South Africans. To be that trigger-happy, you have to have some real fears to justify it, and without race, it's not justifiable. I don't think the actual crime has to do with race, but the explanations surrounding it and the context in which it will be tried do.
I don't think the "why" is necessarily a mystery. As you said, men have been killing women forever. They get in an argument, he gets mad, he shoots. (I'm not saying I know what's in his mind specifically, but most domestic violence comes out of jealousy/anger/a need to control. I don't know if it goes any deeper than that.)

Except that he said he has personally been the victim of crime before and his house had previously been broken into. Whether that is true or not, IDK. But i'm sure it will be investigated further.
Maybe he had enemies? Maybe he was taking drugs? Maybe he had an inferiority complex? Maybe he had some kind of mental illness like paranoid schizophrenia or a mood disorder? Or maybe he was just dumb?
It's interesting to speculate but I wouldn't want to bet my life on what I think might have happened.
Seems like their justice system moves pretty fast over there...so I guess we'll find out soon enough.
Not really understanding why his defense team let him make such a lengthy and detailed statement before the trial started. Especially if he really is guilty. Now the prosecution has all this time to tear about every word of it.

As I was reading through the last few posts, the OJ case popped into my head as well. There had been several domestic violence incidents prior to Nicole's murder, yet instead of arresting him, the police officers would ask for his autograph! Obviously, race was the dominant issue in his trial (and public opinion regarding his guilt), but his celebrity status had enabled him to physically abuse his [white] wife with impunity long before he killed her.
Society has a bizarre tendency to lionize athletes and actors, and rationalize their transgressions no matter how egregious.
South Africa has a very real crime problem, so a fear of an intruder would be perfectly reasonable. I honestly don't see any basis to presume such a concern would necessarily be evidence of racism. Pistorius never identified the race of the alleged intruder, so he was not trying to exploit SA's racial tensions to cover up his culpability. Contrast that with Susan Smith, who placed her children in her car, put a brick on the gas pedal and sent the car into a lake. She told the police that she had been carjacked by a black man, setting off an indiscriminate roundup of black men in South Carolina. Or Charles Stuart, who similarly claimed that a black man had carjacked his car and killed his wife, which set off a racial hysteria in Boston.
IMHO, this has everything to do with hero worship and violence against women, and nothing to do with race.
