Default DNA testing for Ancestral purposes

Has anybody had a DNA test to determine their ancestral lineage? I'm curious about this and wondering how it works, what it will tell you, etc. I have a twin brother and I think I read somewhere that it would be better for the male to have it than the female but now I can't remember why.

I know we have some scientist curlies here, so I'm curious to see what you all think!

it depends on what info you really what to know. i work in an hla typing lab and everyone here has their dna on file. we went as far as allele typing and knowing what part of the world the allele is most prominant. for ex. i have allele's that is most commom in people of asian decent. i also have an allele that is prominate in people of medditeraan decent.

but you can go ay furhter theis this and get you dna sequenced and all that good stuff. while the lab im at can do this, we dont because that is not our main focus or job. we just do the allele thing for the fun of it.

if you want to find out if you are related to some famous person, there are labs that will do that. just make sure its legit. dna testing is expensive. the things we do is 5000$/sample and it is not by any means in depth as you may want to go.

i'm actually at work right now trying to save lives, so i cant get into as many details as i would like, but will try to reply back later if someone else hasnt chimed in already.

I think the only "famous" people I'm related to might be horse thieves. I'm talking about the kind of DNA test that is offered at ancestry.com.
AncestryDNATM includes:

  • Full breakdown of genetic ethnicity
  • Dynamic list of potential new relatives updated in real-time
  • Simple process to receive your personal results online within weeks
  • Ability to integrate with Ancestry.com
  • Test is for both men and women
Here's the faq they have online with more details AncestryDNA Frequently Asked Questions

I have a short break so i can get into this a little more.

the male only dna testing you spoke of test the y chromosome. this is only for males because only males have a Y chromosome.

the DNA testing you posted about uses autosomal DNA testing. its the chromosomes that are not sex chromosomes ( x and y). it test alot more and is a little of what the lab i work at do, we just dont look at the stuff you would want to know.

i know nothing about the testing offered by ancetry.com. i can tell you that this type of testing to get accurant information should be done by professionals. i have a degree and have been doing my job for almost 3 years but if you gave my an analysis of someones autosomal dna, i will still need help interpreting it form my boss who is a doctor. so as long as the lab has competant staff the info you get should be accurant.

if i could afford the 200 i would do it to test it for you and compare it to the results i got from my lab. but sorry no can do right now.

i dont know of any labs that does this, but i am sure there are such as universities who does this outside of ancestery.com, but it will probabbly be more expensive but more reliable.

having said that, if you have the cash, and you really want to know, i say go for it. im sure you could contact someone to get info on the lab they use and what accrediation they have ( all labs in the world has some, they have to, and if the lab they use dont have any, run!).

i did find this review on it:

The Genetic Genealogist | A Review of AncestryDNA – Ancestry.com’s New Autosomal DNA Test

Take it for what you will.

i hope i answered you questions. let me know if you want more info. i will try my best to anwer.

This may sound harsh, but I think my family line should have died out, so I'm afraid of what I'd learn. Like I'm primarily from the area that produces the most jerks, or something. Or I'm related to Hitler.

Well, I was going to ask my brother to do it but I guess it really doesn't matter if it's me instead.

Thanks! I'm still mulling this over

One of the most important things to remember in this world is that you can't help who you're related to.

I have not had this done but would love to know. Several members of my family are into genealogy. We know a great deal about my moms side. Mainly my grandmothers family. We can only trace so far when it comes to my maternal grandfather. Some members of his family were put up for adoption. We know the about them, and about his families actual surname, but that is as far as it goes. We have some ideas (like they might have been travelers) and it would be neat to get that confirmed.

I would also like to know if I am in fact a descendant of John Adams, on my paternal grandmothers side, and also related to one of the first Royal families in *Wales, iphone. Wales* on my paternal grandfathers side.

^ I'm really not sure about this last one either, but after my friend from England cussed me for unknowingly being very Welsh, I did some digging. What I found halfway confirmed it.

I'm not sure what it could tell me about that I don't already know, but I really want to get my dogs' dna done.

Yes! I participated in the genographic project 2.0 and got my results back today! It traced my DNA back 137,000 years. Because I am female I could only do my maternal ancestry so I'm trying to get my father to do it too because he has both an X and Y chromosome so he can trace his paternal AND maternal dna. Here are my results, which I was not expecting at all!

I had it done and found my mom has a connection to Guinea Bissau. But that's only one of her lineages and people have many lineages.

Well, maybe when I get arrested for some dog or animal-related rescuing crime, they'll do it for me.

Otherwise, I'm here to warn you all: stay away from French/German mixes. We're like super-organized and punctual weirdos who still spit (well, I don't, but many Frenchmen do).

Yes I did the maternal side several years ago - don't remember specifics.
