He was the first surgeon general that I remember.

One good reason to only maintain a small circle of friends is that three out of four murders are committed by people who know the victim. ~George Carlin~

He was quite a character. Memorable. I don't remember a surgeon general before him...or after him, for that matter. We should all live to 96.

Did you know he got re-married just a couple years ago...at age 93. His first wife (of 70 years!) died and I guess he was lonely.
I did not know that. I did read an article about how he felt personally about abortion (he did not agree with it) but he said his personal feelings would never impact his job. I guess some politicians were not happy when he did not push his view when he was surgeon general.

He was interesting, as was his facial hair.

I think Homer Simpson sang about him.

By all accounts, he was an excellent pediatric surgeon too, way back during his medical practice days. Very innovative. I long ago worked with a woman whose daughter was saved by Dr. Koop as an infant with a heart surgery that he invented. That daughter was an adult and in medical school, because of his inspiration. I'm sure she's gone on to do great things herself since then.

So, RIP Dr. Koop. One of the very few Conservatives I ever liked.
I didn't realize he was from Bklyn. Yeah, I recall quoting him a lot in our policy debates in high school. Definitely the first SG I rememeber.

RIP
3b (with 3c tendencies) on modified CG

I remember reading and being moved by his book about the death of his son.

RIP.
