Did you even read my other post in this very thread?
I was quoting the very first comment left on the article. Because it was ridiculous.

I've heard this statement all through my history classes in high school. It's so ignorant and infuriating. There's always that one person who sets us back 60 years.

Africa is one of the most diverse countries (continent) on the planet. Not everyone is a black person there. The continent of africa includes countries that speak arabic and spanish and even portuguese for crying out loud. Thats why Americans have such a distorted view of Africa. They only imagine black people on the whole dang continent. Let them show the diversity.

We also have to keep inind that not all countries have the harsh history like the US and how it fought to have things so unfair between whites and blacks for so many years. When someone from Another country their artistic views on races may be totally different. For ex latinos come in all colors too. There were more blacks left in the carribean and south America than in us during the slave trade. Hence the term Afrolatino.

The Sariacasm was pretty obvious, especially to anyone who's been here more than a minute. Yeah, it's a sensitive issue. But I don't think sarcasm was inappropriate here.

Lol im speaking of regular white people. The chick in the photograph I think is either trying to view the grass on the other side or just doing her job. We have no idea what the designer was thinking when they came up with the idea. To tell the truth Ive seen somalians look like the girl in the pic but are real black not fake black. And isnt the girl in the pic Asian or something. She doesnt look just white.

I think the designer did the shoot exactly because of this. Whether it be controversy or positive and negative feedback. They wanted people everywhere to be talking about their work. Its a marketing tactic. Sneaky person. There may have had no racial pun intended but just wanted to strike up a buz to get more exposure=more money.

I get that its a french magazine, and the french (along with other european countries) have treated black people alot better than america in history. Josephine baker lived there because she felt black people were treated with more respect. i think we all get that europe doesnt have america's history. but they know the history, or should. so why do it?

people also have problem's with this because, they obviously wanted a model with darker skin (if not, why make her brown?) so why wouldnt they just hire a black model? why not any model who naturally has browner skin? why paint a white model brown? what was the point?

It's "artistic." Why did Al Jolson sing "mammy" when they could have found any Black man to do it? Why have men in wigs and fake breasts perform on stage when you could have real women? Why dress dogs up in little costumes at the circus when there are humans?

What spiderlashes said about offense being present in the racist art form of it didn't cross my mind. If that's what people who're familiar with racist art like that are clearly seeing/it's unmistakable, then it's safe to say the thought doesn't apply.

The only way I assumed people were reacting to it was "so even when they want to honor Black African beauty they use a white woman, out of perception that her beauty is superior."

Which made me wonder if the shoot's team could have conceived of it like "here's a white woman who wants to capture Black African beauty." Western-idolizing behavior turned around. She's altering herself to fit the mold she's aspiring to. You couldn't send that message with a Black African model.
It might be similar to having the most lovely swastika in the world, embroidered with the finest silk thread onto the most glorious fabric...to showcase the beauty of the materials being used. But it's still a swatika. Materials and intention and craftship be damned. You just don't go there.
LOL, the swastika actually was an ancient eastern symbol before the Nazis co-opted it, so you DO actually see beautiful embroidered swastikas in art and stuff from those cultures that use it with a different meaning. I remember being taken aback as a kid going into an Asian store and seeing the place just loaded with swastikas. But I take your point.

Not totally unlike the art of African face painting that predated its misappropriation by Europeans to mock Black ppl. I guess it's all in the context.

All those white people in Africa who are just a bit less in control then they were during the apartheid years are having a really hard time coping with their slight loss of priviledge, so let's all give them a break, okay?
