African Queen editorial

There is controversy over the choice of model for this editorial. 'African Queen' editorial uses white model- Simply Chic - MSN Living

I don't think they chose wisely.

Saria 02-27-2013 05:02 AM

OMG WTF are the comments on that page?! Commenters, please die in a fire.
It's not even that they chose a white model (sadly not surprising), but they went and put her in brown face. Why? Why couldn't they be bothered to just find a black woman at that point?

The New Black 02-27-2013 05:20 AM

I agree with you GC

annabananalise 02-27-2013 05:27 AM

An "unwise choice" is a huuuuge understatement omg.

Brown/black/yellow face is never never okay.

omggg white people when will you learn?

annabananalise 02-27-2013 05:34 AM

Those comments...oh my god.

Oh my god.

It's like every cliche "but we're post-racial guise!!1!" comment ever made.

annabananalise 02-27-2013 05:47 AM

I just keep going back omg.

I can't with the "But there are white people in Africa! Don't forget about us white people!" comments

Lawd, we couldn't if we tried.

I mean a white girl with African Queen heading the editorial would have been legitimate, yes. But I would have rolled my eyes sooo hard. Because ugh.

I am SO cranky this morning.

Saria 02-27-2013 05:56 AM

Anna, it's racist to think all Africans are black, k?

thelio 02-27-2013 06:11 AM

i read the first two comments and walked away.

we all know white people are in africa how can we forget?

when i read the title, i thought ok she could still be africa, until i saw the pic! At first i thought, "wait, i thought they said they picked a white model?" then i realized, they gave that girl black face!! yes, to me its black face! when you apply make up to white skin to make it appear darker then put them on the cover of afriace queen magazine, that is the same as black face!

I thought that as well, then saw the pic and that she is American.

if she was am african with her regular color it would be fine imo. but she is not african, so strike one! and they gave her brown face?!?!?!? strike 2!!!

sarah42 02-27-2013 07:05 AM

That is silly/stupid. Why couldn't they hire a black model for this job?

As for the article comments. Yes, there are white people in Africa who've lived there for generations. But this photo is clearly meant to depict a black African woman. If they wanted to portray a white African woman, they wouldn't have used makeup to make her skin dark.

spiderlashes5000 02-27-2013 08:11 AM

publicity stunt?

nynaeve77 02-27-2013 10:04 AM

Good Lord, the comments. How can there be that many idiots in the world? HOW???? :sad3:

LadyV69 02-27-2013 11:17 AM

I couldn't take it after the first few comments. SMDH at all the clueless people there still are in the world. The fact that they didn't bother to use a black model is enough of an insult to me.

But no really, if you're an african queen (not just person from africa), why are you white? Let's be real. I've never seen a white african queen in a history book.

No one seems to mind when Beyonce straightens her hair and highlights it blonde and uses a pale foundation on her face.

NOT ALL AFRICANS ARE BLACK!!!!! Just shows you how ignorant a "certain ethnic" group is...

i'm tired of this racial calling BS, this is America if you dont like it go back to Africa or where ever you come from and see how they treat you there, i'm white and i don't get any special treatment because of my skin color so dont feel left out of the equation. I dont hear any other country going out of their way to help people either. face the facts this is not a fair world or eveyone would have it made.

BS, Blacks need to get a life. Africa includes black and white. The north is white the south is black, get over it. Cleopatra, one of the first "African" Queens was Greek.

So who cares what color she is? Aren't we supposed to be past this "skin color " thing? Does anyone complain about black Santa Clauses?

Give it a rest for crying out loud...GROW UP people!

White people still butt hurt slavery ended. The end.

annabananalise 02-27-2013 01:33 PM

^^ like they have to be trolling.

They really can't be trying that.

annabananalise 02-27-2013 01:53 PM

If this was ignant white people bingo, we'd win three times over.

Cleopatra was Egyptian, ya? She married a Roman true, but she was born in Egypt to an Egyptian pharaoh (who was Macedonian (?), but omg her mom was Egyptian.

Doesn't even matter, she definitely wasn't one of the first African "queens". She was towards the end. History, sis. Can you do it?

Santa isn't real so it doesn't matter.

I...am still cranky.

thelio 02-27-2013 02:02 PM

I cant believe the cleopatra card was pulled. really? yes her father was greek, but her mother? no most likely not. either way you cut it, cleo was not white.

thelio 02-27-2013 02:09 PM

When i hear african queen, i think of Queen Nzingha and Queen Amina. They were warrior queens!!!
