consignment store?
Has anyone ever taken something to a consignment store?
I did a stupid thing I got some money from a relative for Valentine's Day (!!! total surprise) and I went and bought a Burberry bag. Insanity! (I'm a bag hound - I regularly read the purse forum and lust after ridiculously pricey purses. So purty!). I used it once and killed my back. The bag is too heavy. I won't ever wear it again. I don't have the patience or knowledge to deal with ebay and a friend suggested I take it to a consignment store.
How does it work? Do I make an appointment? How do I know how much to ask for? Being rich is such a burden (hee).

Where did you buy the bag? Can't you take it back?
If you bought it at a discount place and can't take it back, I'd be more inclined to do ebay than a consignment store. A consignment store will offer you a fraction of what you paid for the bag. If you do ebay, look up how to tell if a Burberry bag is real and take pictures of those things.

I bought the bag at Bloomingdales but I took the tags off right in the store and wore it once. Usually, I never do that. I always give myself a chance to see if I change my mind. At least that's one mistake I'll never make again - buy in haste - repent at leisure LOL.
I can't deal with ebay. I need a simpler solution - just dump it at a store and take my lumps. I might just donate it to a thrift store. I made a mistake - don't want to punish myself on top of my mistake by spending time and effort getting rid of the thing.
Thanks for chiming in, though.
ETA: I have the receipt from Bloomies, in case the consignment store wants verification that it is real. It's so gorgeous (moan).

At the ones out here, you can drop stuff off at certain times and if they have time, they will go thru it while you wait. Or you can shop while you wait for them to get to it. Or you can come back (they immediately tag all your pieces w/ your name and #).
They make pricing decisions. If you disagree, no deal.
After a month, if it hasn't sold, they drop the price a certain %. Then more after month two. If it hasn't sold after three months, you need to come get it or they donate it to a charity.
If it sells, you get half of the amount. If it's over a certain $ amount, they will cut you a check and mail to your address. If it's less than a certain amount, they just credit your account and you have to come in and ask for it.
Occasionally, they will offer to buy things outright and you walk away with the cash. But that usually comes out to less than if you consigned.
What's the problem with selling it on ebay? It's so much easier now. I can do it all from my phone in less than 5 minutes.
Yes, I would def try to return it first. I am shameless in that way. Bought a pair of boots that were expensive for me at the time (college). I walked the heck out of those boots all day all around campus in the rain. They destroyed my feet to the point of terars but I had no time to go home and change. By the end of the day, they were scuffed, visibly worn, muddy and the insides were full of blood from the blisters they gave me; had to walk home barefoot. Guess where I was the next morning? Back at the store w/ my receipt getting my money! LOL

I'd try taking the bag back to Bloomingdales before doing anything rash, but that's just me. All they can do is say no.

What is the store's return policy as far the number of days you have to make a return or exchange? You can take it back without the tags as long as you have the receipt. They can verify that it was a recent purchase and do a refund.

Bloomingdales is pretty good about returns - at the very least they will probably give you store credit.

Mrs. Poppers, Spiderlashes, Poodlehead, Speckla, RileyB, you guys are ABSOLUTELY TERRIFIC! I never thought about trying to return it - but I'm going to try today.
Spider, I'm so techie challenged. I don't even know how to upload a picture to my computer - don't have a smart phone, etc. That's why I haven't thought of using ebay.
I'll let you know if I can return it. I'm going to try very hard - I'm a great Bloomies customer and even worked in the store at one point. Stay tuned....

Take it back! If you only used it once, they should take it back. If not, you'll probably get a store credit.

At the consignment shop near me, designer bags are usually priced around $100, and the seller only gets a percentage of that. There have to be better options for you!
I hope the Bloomingdales return works.

I would return it. I wouldn't have thought of any other options.
At least now I know how consignment shops work, by reading this thread.
