Default Endoscopy anyone?!

Has anyone had this procedure?

Well gyne is checking for pre cancerous cells, polyps, haemorroids, fissures, Inflammation, and endo. I have history of bowel cancer in my family. My aunt passed away in January this year.

I don't know whether I'm getting the colonscopy at the same time as well. I get the emergency referral in 2 weeks. If I don't hear anything I've got to go to the doctors to refer me. I'm also being referred to the surgeons because I'm still having pain in my right side and other symptoms. I'm so scared and still not getting any better.

TIA.

Hi Braidsntwists, Are you having an endoscopy of your GI tract (down your throat and esophagus to look into your stomach)? Usually that is what an endoscopy means but sometimes they scope some other place so I want to make sure.

I had an endoscopy of the GI tract. No biggie so you can relax a little. They put you to sleep so you don't feel a thing. You might have some gas pains afterward but nothing remarkable. I was quite hungry and thirsty when I awoke and went with a cousin and had a big breakfast so you see it wasn't anything terrible.

I think you will be told not to eat or drink after midnight but your doc should give you specific instructions. There was no awful prep at all that I remember. They want someone to be there to take you home because you might be a little groggy from being put to sleep. All in all it amounted to nothing. They found out I had gerd but the actual endoscopy was a breeze.

I'm so sorry you are feeling anxious. I know waiting and worrying is the worst, but medicine is so amazing these days so even if they find something, chances are excellent it can be treated. Please post back and let us know how you are feeling. PM me anytime if you have private questions. I'm wishing for the best for you.

Lucky! I didn't get put out when I had an endoscopy. I was told they don't do that because they need you awake and compliant during the procedure. They did drug me, though, and I don't remember a thing from soon after meeting the doctor and swallowing the nasty numbing gel until I felt the tube being removed. The tube hurt a bit when it was coming out - nothing too awful, but not fun. I was also sore for a few days where I'd felt it scraping all through my esophagus and a bit in my stomach as well, but again nothing horrible.

I was told no solid foods or anything red after midnight but was allowed to have clear liquids until a few hours before the procedure. Afterward they said I didn't even need to eat soft foods or anything, just eat whatever. One thing I can tell you, though, is that when you're still woozy from the drugs and you've just gotten out of the hospital, DO NOT let someone talk you into eating if you're not feeling it. Like, definitely don't wait 5 hours to eat afterward, but if instead of hunger you feel queasiness and aversion to food, don't let whoever drove you demand that you eat something practically immediately because you need something to fill your stomach and absorb the drugs or whatever. You will vomit and it will suck.

I had an upper GI endoscopy about 20 years ago. I was given a general and don't remember it at all. I kept asking the nurse afterwards if she was sure they actually performed the procedure. (They were looking for ulcers...which thankfully, I didn't have.)

Best wishes!

I have done an endoscopy probably 4 or 5 times. Not bad at all. I was put out and don't remember anything really, just a little groggy afterwards. Only once did i have trouble but they had to an additional test while in there with a dye and that didn't sit well but I was aware ahead of time it could happen. Otherwise no biggie.

Ive had 2, one upper and one lower. They give you Twilight (so you can still follow directions but you won't remember anything). You won't remember it and afterwards you will ask the same question over and over again.

I ate immediately after both of mine and I was fine.

I did have a minor issue with my 2nd one, but it was only because I woke up in the middle of it and starting fighting the nurses as they were installing the camera. That caused a little tenderness later because I was moving when I wasn't supposed to, but otherwise I was fine.

good luck. It's pretty simple and you are asleep so you will be ok

Sorry for the late reply. The fatigue is a nightmare and fall asleep at times with no warning. I wake up feeling tired. This stomach pain that is worse in the night and during my period. These dizzy spells are scary. My mom said I've lost weight. It feels like my bowels are still full even though I've been to the toilet and the pain doesn't away. I can't exercise due to the pain. It's really disrupting my life. I know something is not right.

I think it's a colonscopy. I will know which one when I get the letter in the post and will let you all know. I hope I don't bleed afterwards. I won't know whether it's normal or not lol. I've filled up the toilet with blood and can't even see my stool. I've had clots but it's never occult blood. I'm hoping it's somthething minor but I need to get this bleeding fixed. It's worse around my period. The nurse in hospital said that I should get the injection to knock me out. I hope they find something. I have had surgery for endo and adhesions obstructing my bowel. I hope it's not that again and need a colostomy and stoma bag.

Is there no way you could get in to see a doctor sooner? Losing all that blood is probably contributing to the fatigue. I don't understand why you are having to wait 2 weeks with the symptoms you are having. I am so sorry. No wonder you are scared.

If you don't mind answering, where do you live? Is there a teaching hospital near you where you might go to an emergency room? Please keep posting and know that we care.

Thanks, curlypearl. I will update you all know. I hope they can tell me the cause of this bleeding. The gyne said that doesn't know what else to do for me on Monday this week. This pain is driving me insane. I have been referred back to the surgeons. I'm in the UK. The hospital I go to is about 20 minutes away. It's a teaching hospital. There's waiting list so I have to wait until my turn. All they would do is a scan and blood tests and give me morphine syrup or the injection and at times that doesn't even work. I'm getting fed up of taking painkillers that I've given them up because they do nothing for the pain. They won't give me anything else. I just cope with my heating pad and take tramadol and paracetamol or take the strongest dose of cocodamol when I can't take the pain no more. I waited 11 months last year for them to sort the obstruction in the beginning of December. I've been admitted 7 times. I almost died from sepsis and heart failure. My pulse never went down. My temperature did go down though. First it was my appendix and I was bleeding then during the rectal exam and had that removed with open surgery. I had infections and went into shock when they tried to treat the infection. I'm allergic to penecillin ibruprofen. They were getting ready to resusitate me and was hooked up to the machines. I was lucky to make it overnight. I had a ECG and that was normal. My pulse was 160bpm. My blood pressure was normal. The weird thing was I was wide awake. I just felt hot, headache and pain increasing. I haven't responded well to anti epilepsy medicine. The doctors thought it was nerve damage. I've had one MRI and CT and nothing showed. The xray showed that my bowel was looped, kinked, twisted, and partially blocked before I had the surgery in December.

I've tried birth control and it's not strong enough and I don't want to try the injections. I can't take the high dose combined because of headaches. The low dose POP makes the bleeding worse and I bled from the front and back with that. I'm wondering if I'm anemic now. Do you take or have taken Prostap injection? The gyne did say to try and see if it will help but I'm worried that my periods won't return and the side effects.

I don't think I'm healing well. I still have bruises from where the drip was and my incisions look brusied and puffy like a keloid. I don't know if it's a sign of a blood disorder. My lip in the corner of my mouth has split and is sore and have a red pin sized spot on the palm of my right hand. My gums bleed at times. I have a patch on my tongue and don't what it is. My hair has thinned out around my hairline. If I could post pictures I would. I don't whether it's BC and painkillers or what. I think I will go into hospital if I can't cope any more with this pain.

Braids, I am SO sorry. I can't even imagine all that you have been through. I don't know anything about UK medical care, and don't understand why they haven't been able to help you feel better.

Do you have trusted friends/relatives you can talk to? Do you have one physician who is in charge who can guide you? Do you think if you are admitted to the hospital they can keep you there and figure out what is wrong and keep you comfortable and treat you until you are much better?

Makes me wonder about the UK medical system although we have our problems here in the US for sure!

I have family and friends. It's hard to get them to understand at times. I look ok but they can't see what's wrong. I can't even do ironing without pain. Even walking for long periods, climbing the stairs makes my pain worse, and I feel so drained. I've been to my GP so many times and they won't listen to me. They don't think my bleeding is from my bowel because I'm female and sounds a bit sexist in a way. I know for a fact that it's coming the back. The nurses even saw the blood on my stools. I feel like I'm talking to a brick wall. I keep telling them it's the same pain. My mum who is a nurse has been to the hospital asking where the endoscopy appointment letter is. I hope they have booked me in. I really don't know what else to do. My GP won't refer me because the rectal bleeding is persisting. I'll ask a different GP if I don't hear anything within 2 weeks if I have to.

I've just managed to eat a small amount of cereal and salad with sauce and brown rice. It's the first proper meals that I've had since last sunday. I feel now with the pain. I think I'm dehydrated again. I don't like feeling dizzy all the time. Maybe the doctors will listen when I have a head injury and won't be able to speak to them no more to tell them about my symptoms.

I was awake for mine too by my choice. They only used demerol and I HATE demerol, makes the room spin. They used hurricane spray for my throat and some phenegran (which at that time I used all the time so I wasnt very sensitive to it). Not bad. Had my esophagus stretched too during the procedure.

Hi Crimson,
I'm curious. Why did you choose to be awake? I'm such a wuss during all these procedures, I want to be totally asleep.

Because they only used Demerol and Phenergan. If they would've used Fentanyl (it clears the body more cleanly), I would've been put out. Demerol gives me a wicked hangover and just makes the room spin. Doesn't help with pain or put me asleep.

I stay awake for as much as I can. I hate the way anesthesia feels and how long it takes me to recover from it.
I've had throat surgery, oral surgeries, etc all awake for this reason.
