The Lord taketh away

I was advised by my sister awhile ago that my uncle passed away. I am in total shock. My sister's explanation of what happened made little sense as she can be scatterbrained, so I got the story from my mother. Just on Thursday, he went to the hospital complaining of chest pain. They said it was gallstones. While they were operating to remove the gallstones, his esophagus ruptured and he had internal bleeding and septic shock. He needed 4 pints of blood. That was also fixed. It was thought that he would be fine. Yet by last night, he was on life support. Then his kidneys failed and he couldn't urinate. He also got some sort of infection that no medicine could clear up. Now he's dead. According to my mother, the doctors said that the esophagus contains a lot of bacteria and when it ruptured, it was released into his body and my uncle simply couldn't fight it. He was perfectly fine 8 months ago at my grandmother's funeral. He was a good guy. Very handsome too. When I was a child, he used to model at fashion shows around the region (South). He was only 60. I can't even begin to process this. I had initially meant to come on here to post that I now have a boyfriend, but that story is for another time.

As to why...there really isn't enough info here to make an amateur armchair diagnosis, but was your uncle an alcoholic? Esophogeal rupture can occur spontaneously, but I think it's more common in long-term alcohol abuse.
