i'm conflicted....

i am glad that a generation of women in the UK had a female leader to show them that there are no limits to what they can do.

but...

the policies of Baroness Thatcher's years certainly helped paved the way for the global financial crisis that has been simmering for the past 6 years and the growing inequality between the rich and middle and lower classes.

she also supported apartheid in South Africa.

*shudder*

and Saddam Hussein...

I am conflicted as well. I am well aware of her policies. She was also a buddy of Ronnie's (grrrr). I just wanted to acknowledge her as a woman who was a leader of a powerful country.

Add me to the conflicted people. She may have been a pioneer, but it's hard for me to give her a pass as she was best buds with Reagan.

I thought she died years ago.

Well...goodbye Margaret-Mandela-is-a-terrorist-Thatcher. We don't need you or your ilk anymore.

As someone who grew up through her 80's Britain I'm not in the least conflicted. She was just arrogant beyond belief.

**** her, she was a terrible ****ing person. It's sad that a human being died, but I'm not mourning or mythologizing her.

Btw, for some reason I still care about this: Years ago I apologized here for saying I was glad to hear Jerry Falwell was gone. I wasn't sorry, and in no way did I sink to his level by being happy that hatred-spewing monster, who sentenced countless people to death by AIDS, had nothing more to say.

I'm annoyed that she had to go and die this week - I'm heading off to the UK later today and am no doubt going to be hearing about her ad nauseum. Hope my parents don't want to watch the funeral, I'll have to find somewhere else to be if they do.

Russel Brand had a really interesting essay about her.

We couldn't have been more different politically and she was often a quite horrid person. But she was a very important and powerful woman and I think of her as an important role model for women, no matter their leanings.

You said so well what I was thinking, but couldn't put into words.

She was a huge figure in history, and paved a way for women around the world.
