Explosion reported near finish line of Boston Marathon

I'm sitting here watching this coverage some more. Do they think the missing guy didn't do it? They keep saying they think the older one forced the younger one. Not sure how you could know, but ok.

Also the speculations on motivation are "hatred", "sociopaths", and "hating America"....do you think they really hated America or did they have some kind of problem with Boston? I dunno. If I were a terrorist I wouldn't hit Boston much less the Boston marathon.

Also, do you think the carjacked guy could have been....involved? That is weird that they killed a random campus cop, but let a carjacked random guy go...

I still think they both were involved. Now it's possible the younger brother 'followed' his brothers ideology. But I do think he is involved and he has people's blood on him.

It is odd about the car jacker guy. Very odd. I am still confused about the MIT cop/7-11/car jacker scenario.

The cops just stated that they did NOT rob the 7/11.

Lord I should just stop watching the news. I wonder if they even killed the cop now!

they just took the second guy away in an ambulance. Hopefully we can get some answers. This has been a long week.
This is such a relief it's hard to describe.

Everyone needs to stop harping on the erroneous details if the urgent reporting of the past week. Living through this has been hard for everyone in the immediate area, and I can't even begin to imagine how hard it's been for the people who were victims of these men. Of course mistakes were made. Everyone makes mistakes! More information and a ton of clarifications will come out in the coming weeks and months.

But for now let's all just finally exhale that we are no longer in imminent, known danger, and give our thanks and respect to the hundreds or thousands of people who have put their lives at risk and worked tirelessly to keep us safe.

Its been over 12 hours of live breaking news here, non stop all day. People have been in lockdown in their homes or evacuated all day. The police department reported he was throwing grenades at officers. These are response teams that many of us know personally. For those in the Boston area, this hasn't been just a news update. Its effected all their entire day/week.

I know no one is on twitter, but if you guys are, you should read Kal Penn (harold and kumar)'s tweets on the news reporting.

Here's some exerpts:

CNN reporting suspects may have been brothers
- one hour ago

CNN: "There is, in fact, a Dunkin Donuts." (Breaking News)

Fox News: "As you can see behind me...that is a black vehicle..." (good job!)

. @msnbc: "The one they're trying to find was born in Krajikistan..." <--- not a country.

For those of us not watching from our dorm rooms; its really not funny.
too bad I don't live in a dorm.

I am so glad, and relieved, he was taken in with no further damage done.

I am sure everyone in the Boston area (+ many more) is more than ready to exhale. This has been a rough week for many people.

When I hear terms like "hipster" I think, who told cliques they could leave high school??

I am glad that this is over for Boston. I have to say that it made me teary to see people cheering the emergency vehicles and police.

And I've been feeling sick about this thing all day. All those neighborhoods are familiar; a friend's daughter was injured; I just found out a little boy from my town was injured, too. And now that the imminent danger has passed, I'm relieved and grateful, but possibly even sadder than before. But still -- for God's sake --we have to laugh at something!

when will your favs?

Hopefully this guy survives and they can find out what the motive was for doing this and if others participated.I wonder how sure they are this is the guy and/or the only living guy involved. I guess we will get to see a lot of the new anti-terrorism laws in action now.

People are concerned about the reporting errors because we know what some Americans do with bad information: they act on it. It would really suck if someone who is darker skinned or black (they managed to basically implicate all brown people with that one) was harmed by some overzealous individuals or group because they heard that someone matching the description of who the cops are looking for bombed the Boston Marathon. If they're correct, basically the folks who did it will end up being disaffected, white, Americans (all this amplification of them being ethnically Chechen and ignoring the fact that they were legally documented and American is jarring). Bad information had everyone looking at brown people sideways, looking for the stereotypical Muslim person, looking for a foreigner. Unfortunately CNN was all too happy to spread bad information all around. That said, I am glad CNN finally dialed down the rhetoric. I'm really glad the president said some things, because everyone with a brown skin, a big nose and/or an accent is gonna be a bit nervous for a while.

I am not disputing this was a despicable act. I just don't want uninvolved and innocent people to be implicated or endangered.

Yes. I teach immigrants for a living. The fact that this was a fairly integrated immigrant family makes me very nervous for my students. Certain voices will shout, "You see? You can't trust any of them, even the ones who seem American." The foreign background will be viewed as the most salient factor, even if it isn't. We don't know all the facts, of course -- or if anybody else was involved. But a certain segment of the population will completely ignore what these guys may have had in common with the James Holmeses of the world. They will see only the foreign aspect. Like being born somewhere else is, in and of itself, a risk factor. That is a simplistic and dangerous interpretation.

I don't know if the brothers' ancestry was ever sorted out, but the Chechen aspect was certainly played up by some of our Russian customers. One woman spent plenty of time at the demo counter telling me about her son in Boston and how she hated Chechens because they blew up 'all the houses' as she put it in her limited English.

I guess we're not the only ones who stereotype.
