Explosion at Texas fertilizer plant

I would quote and summarize, but it's hard to do from my phone:

Explosion hits fertilizer plant north of Waco, Texas - CNN.com

What's going on?! I hope that this was an industrial accident.
Lotsa and other Texas curlies, are you alright?

Here is another article, Moody. It looks like a small fire broke out and when water was sprayed on it, due to ammonia nitrate, the plant exploded.

I hope the Texas curlies are okay. Based on this article, several fire fighters and near by residents were injured.
When I hear terms like "hipster" I think, who told cliques they could leave high school??

I can not even begin to imagine what it is like in their 911 office/EOC right now. That would be devastating. You lose extended co workers/family, a nursing home and several houses are devastated, and you have a large scale hazmat situation and evacuation going on thanks to the dangerous chemicals in the air... That is a horrific night. No time to grieve. No time to think about it.

My thoughts are with everyone involved.

One more updated article.

I appreciate that Emergency Services are refusing to release death totals and names at this time. Families should be notified first, and the media does not need something else to run rampant with. Give them time to get accurate information.

I m so very sorry.
3a/b, CG mostly.
Mexico City.
Glad it was an accident. Sort of..,
No MAS.

Moodydove, I don't live in Texas. I was raised there, but now live in Arizona. Thanks for the concern.
My sorority sister is from a small town just next to it, but her family is fine.

My line is going over there this weekend to help out.

Yes, several fire fighters, first responders, and possibly some police officers are missing. Early this morning they had 700 emergency responders on scene. It sounds like people from all over went to help them.

^ That is a good thing. I have not heard details this morning but I do think they had several leveled houses/buildings to search and the evacuation. They will need all the help they can get.

So no one knew not to douse the fire with water? Or maybe there was some chemical in there that should not have been there?

It's really bad. I had a friend with family in the area. Her aunt lives 5 miles from the plant and it knocked out her sliding glass door and blew her wooden door off. There were several homes, apartments, nursing home, all leveled near by...Tons and tons are of homes and businesses are severly damaged.

There are missing firemen and policeman that were working the fire when the explosion went off. Last I heard 15 confirmed dead but they have not found all the missing. Tons of search and rescue teams are working right now.

This is a very small community. Town is around 2500 people. Most people that travel this stretch of I-35 know the town because of the bakery right off the interestate.

Please keep this community in your thoughts and prayers.

From what I am seeing/hearing now a tank of chemicals combusted/exploded and the rain and wind seemed to knock down the the hazmat threat in the area. That is good news. The main problem they are having now is unstable structures that can not be searched. They have to attempt stabilization before they can enter.

I am glad so many responders have came to help and support them. They can at least force people to take a break, and help make up for the loss of members (many I am sure are volunteer). Trying to find survivors and care for them is #1.

(((Hugs))) to your friend and her family members.

its pretty horrific. I've spent a lot of my day working on disaster response. The one thing that kind of saved things was the rain. If it was dry and windy, all of that chemical crap in the air would have made things a lot worse. I won't post the video, but there is a youtube video of a guy with his daughter filming the whole thing live.
hello.world.
^ That has been all over the news. I came in to post that CNN just did an interview with her. They said so many people had asked that the child be found, to make sure she was okay. She is.

((((Hugs)))) to you Webjockey. I know you have to need one right now. That has to be an incredibly rough situation.

They were telling some rather touching stories about people BBQing for everyone on the street. As my Aunt would say, "This is the South. If something happens, you throw a casserole at it".
