Twerking...

That's hardcore twerking. And I thought people only did that twerking for laughs.

We can blame Miley Cyrus for doing the *** in a unicorn suit, she deemed it appropriate to twerk your life away....all girls love her. (or maybe just I do)

Somehow I don't think the punishment would be the same if they had filmed themselves ballroom dancing!

Also, I think they are being punished so severely because they are mostly girls. If boys had made this video, hardly anyone would have cared. But, because it was girls being sexual, we must stomp it out. This is slut-shaming. And this is part of our Culture of Rape. The school is getting away with it because a lot of people think "they deserve what they got". Sounds like rape culture to me.
I've been thinking about this whole thing and just not sure how I feel about it all. The actual dance is ugly and vulgar and quite weird when done upside down against a wall (don't get it). That said, every generation has some stupid thing that they 'do'.

I would be ashamed if any of these were my kids. But then, I notice that most girls go to the prom nowadays dressed like low class call girls so I'm guessing modern day parents don't really care about such things.

I do see reason for some sort of punishment for using school equipment, school grounds, school time, to film this. I think some sort of community service would have been in order.

Other than that, I would just like to bleach my eyes out from seeing the video. I find actual porn far less gross than that video.

While I do agree that there is a double standard when it comes to sexualized dance moves, I don't think that is *all* that is going on here.

1. There is a question of appropriateness. School is not (or shouldn't be) the time to display your bumping and grinding/booty popping skills. Period. You're there to learn and to socialize with peers. Sex & sexualized activity/dancing should be done on your own time.

2. The school assumes responsibility for these students from the time they walk on the grounds/get on the school bus. It's a big deal admin. wise for those students to have been unaccounted for. If they had used that time to, IDK, have UNO tournament they would still likely be in trouble. (Not as much trouble...granted).

I would feel differently if these were, say, college kids making a video. But college students are afforded a lot more freedom than their younger counterparts.

Yeah, this is absurd. I agree that suspension is defensible, but I can't believe they were banned from prom and graduation for dancing (even if they did skip school and use school equipment to do it). I read a couple other articles about this and I do think the punishment for the dancers was too extreme. My understanding is that the guy with the camera said he was making a video for a school class. He went into the 6th period journalism class and asked if anyone wanted to twerk for his school project. These kids said yes and left class.

The dancers didn't ask more questions about how and where their dance video would be used, so everyone was surprised when the kid then added the explicit music and put the video on youtube. It was the combo of the dancing AND the music that put the video over the top.

I think it's fairly safe to say the kid was authorized to use the camera. And it probably wasn't technically "cutting class" for the kids to participate. They put classes like journalism/media and yearbook at the end of the day because they're electives and kids are allowed to come and go to take pictures and such.

In my opinion, the kid that made the video should have had a more severe punishment than the dancers. The dancers should be punished in some way but to take away both prom and graduation is too much. I'd take away prom and leave it at that. Or maybe have the kids do special projects about the sexual objectification of women in order to earn the right to graduation.
When are women going to face the fact that they dont know their own bodies as well as men who have heard things?

I'm not able to see the girls video, but I was able to click on the one of the boy that Medussa posted (I'm not at work). It looks so stupid to me. Stupid, boring and puerile. Like something a 3rd grader would giggle at, like they used to giggle if someone's underpants showed.

I think the kid who made the video should be punished more severely than the kids who participated. Kids do dumb things.

I agree that the punishment is suitable. I don't consider twerking dancing when the only thing you do is shake your butt. Dance is an expressive art in all of it's forms from ballroom to hiphop. If we would have done this at my high school, the punishment would have been the same or worse. There are videos of children doing this and thinking it's cute, it's not. There are who are famous because of twerking why? There is a video of a father spanking his two daughters because he caught them making a twerk video. Everyone made a big deal out of it and said he was abusing them because he used a belt and used force. I don't think it's slut slamming, the punishment to be suspended and not participate in graduation and prom is a common punishment, when I was in high school kids received it for fighting, talking back, and ditching class. Males and females alike.
I think using a belt on children forcefully is abuse, but that's a whole different thread.
