Twerking...

Thirty-two students...most of them girls...got in big trouble at school for "twerking" in a video...that booty shaking dance move. They were suspended, can't go to prom, and are banned from graduation ceremonies.

Maybe it's just me, but this punishment seems disproportionately harsh, probably because it was girls being sexual, and we must crush sexual behavior in girls, at all costs.

Slut shaming at it's finest.

Crap...the video was banned from youtube. I saw it, and, while the song lyrics were really offensive, I didn't think the dancing was anything more than mildly obscene. You can catch news coverage of it with bits of the video on most sites, but not the actual video. Here's one:

That's so stupid. They're prob jealous that those girls can twerk and they can't.

That's a youtube fail for the kids. Maybe they'll think twice about what they decide to put out into the world in the future. It's one thing to twerk...in the mirror/@ a party/for your boyfriend/etc. It's something entirely different to do it on school grounds, with school property, & then broadcast it for the whole world to see.

I know kids don't really think like this, but the punishment factor seems to go up when embarrassment is involved. And I'm not a teacher or a parent, but I hope to never be put in a position where I have to comment on my student's or child's twerking ability.
All over the news here. I guess they broke a school rule, but the punishment does not fit the "crime" at all.
I think that I deceive genius.

The suspension is fine IMO. They filmed on school grounds with school equipment. I think banning them from prom and graduation activities/ceremonies is waaaaay too harsh.

I have to agree with RCW on this one. I don't think boys who made a similar video would be treated that way.

Banning them from prom and graduation is ridiculous. They should be punished for ditching class, using school property, etc, but this is crazy.

Can anyone see this video? If they deserve to go to prom and be in the graduation ceremonies, I don't see what doing any type of dancing, however "obscene" has to do with it. Punishment not aligning with "crime."

2/c and some 3A.
Protein sensitive but can use occasionally
Highly porous. Color over grey.
Best 1st day method: Super Soaker
Stylers: Mix Curls in a Bottle into everything for shine. Terrible pj
Sometimes try roller sets - classic glamor but I prefer my curls.
Every day is a gift
It's tacky and vulgar but if they just HAD to do it, they should've done it on their own time, with their own phones, and left the school name out of it. They broke a bunch of rules. They can deal with the consequences.

I think in the grand scheme of things the punishment is not that big a deal (well, maybe graduation), but the lesson they'll take from this is huge.

I agree with whoever said that a suspension would be appropriate. Banning them from prom and graduation is over the top. Especially graduation! The ceremony isn't for them; it's for their families.

Yeah, this is absurd. I agree that suspension is defensible, but I can't believe they were banned from prom and graduation for dancing (even if they did skip school and use school equipment to do it). Somehow I don't think the punishment would be the same if they had filmed themselves ballroom dancing!
