Default Ask your cat questions here

There seems to be a lot of cat owners here. I figured it would be a good idea to have a thread for cat questions that can be used as a reference. I will start.

How do you weigh your cat? Do you have a scale specific for cats or do you use a scale designed for humans?

I just pick my cat up, stand on the scale with her in my arms, step back after I've seen the weight. Then I put her on the floor again, step back on the scale without her in my arms and calculate. ((me+cat)-me)

I like the idea, however my cat doesn't like to being picked up. Loves to climb into my lap though. I might be able to weight her by picking her up from my lap, then I can weight us both.

I have a baby scale with a hold button. Very accurate. This one http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...w_bottom_links

Hmmm I've never thought to weigh my cat other than when he goes to the vet.

My question is regarding a road trip with my feline friend. So Mr. Duke has never spent more than 15-20 minutes in the car TOPS. I'm moving this coming Saturday --now it's only a 2.5 hour car ride, but still far longer than anything he's endured before. Any tips or suggestions to ease his stress level (and mine...ha ha) ? TIA!

The other drawback is it doesn't show incremental weight loss which can be key to early catch on some illnesses. Half a pound in a week is big in a cat. Also those with elderlies can catch bad news quickly.

Have a blanket handy to drape over the carrier. This sometimes calms a bad rider.

My daughter and I need to go out of town for about 4 days, but can't take our cat with us. Should we board her or leave her at home and ask a neighbor to feed her 3 times a day? Of course the neighbor would have to clean the litter box daily.

I find cats are usually more comfortable at home. I'm a crazy cat mom and I only ask for two a day (unless there is a special needs.) be awesome to have someone do three!

I would personally leave her at home and have your neighbor come check on her.

I've done that with my cat many times over the years, and it's worked out very well. I think boarding would be more stressful for the kitteh, personally.

Is 3x/day really necessary though? That seems a bit much?

Thanks Chupie. I would just have to ask them to give her a can and a half, each time.

For only 4 days, I would just leave her home alone with a big bowl of dry food and several water dishes (in case one or two get spilled). Isn't that the advantage of having a cat over a dog...they don't need the intense care that dogs need?

Thanks, LA woman, on second thought, it is a bit much to ask a neighbor to come on three times a day. I did realize that in my answer to Chupie.

RCW, I don't feed her dry food. You are right, having a cat is still more advantageous for me than a dog at this point in my life.

I would never leave a cat alone that long. I've heard some bad stories. Cats get sick, get stuck, and they get lonely. It's just a bad idea. Overnight possibly but more than that no way.

I don't feed mine only dry food either. But she does fine with just dry when left for a couple days.

I guess I live life on the edge. My cat only moves around when the sunbeam moves, so I'm not worried about her getting hurt or stuck anywhere.

This is my dilemma. We will be staying with a family member who doesn't like cats. My cat does wander around at night sometimes so I am leery about leaving her alone for 4 days and I am also quite sure she will get lonely. She has never been alone for more than 4 to 5 hours. Ughhhh, this is frustrating!

My own rule of thumb was that I'd leave my cat alone for up to 2 nights. Any more than that, and I'd have someone come check on him.

It is probably more for my own peace of mind than anything.

I used to not think it was a big thing but I knew someone who was gone two days. Came home could not find cat. Looked and looked. Finally found he had fallen behind water heater and was wedged front paws down. Very near thing. Had been at least a day and paws were burned. Very dehydrated and in bad shape. It's just... You just never know. For me twice a day checks are important.
