Default calling all bakers/cooks: zester vs. grater?

Of all of the nc.com discussions, I bet this one is pretty original. But all kinds of knowledge is here....

I've seen a couple of dessert recipes that have called for either lemon zest or orange zest so I was in the market for a zester. Then I recalled by mom's old box grater with multiple surfaces. In checking those out, I saw that there are 6-sided graters. But I didn't consistently see that one of those sides could be used as a zester. So does anyone know of a grater that has a zester on one of the sides? What should I look for in a grater? Any brand to recommend?
Thanks

I have several Microplanes for doing various tasks. Good thing is that the way they are made, it's had to do harm to the skin on the back of your fingers!

Microplane zester. Without a doubt.

We have a zester we bought at the supermarket, nothing fancy. It works great! Our risotto always tastes delicious!

I've never seen a microplane zester until now.

I swear I have that model for stone shaving. I swear to you that it looks EXACTLY like that. If I knew I could have subbed it for a zester, I would have. hehe...

OK. I'm done being ridiculous. I have wondered the answer to this as well, so I look forward to all the answers. Because I'm poor and cheap, I'd just buy a grater, and use the fine side for zesting.

I've used the small holes on a grater for zesting. You can get Farberware at my local supermarket so I assume others carry that brand or similar graters too. I also have an almost flat roundish grater, which I've used for the same purpose. I like it a little better because I can lay it on top of my bowl and zest directly into my dish/recipe.

Thanks all....perhaps I'll go with this:
MicroplaneŽ Better Box Grater - Bed Bath & Beyond

It's pricey but Microplane must be a good brand.

If you're just looking for something to zest fruit peels, get something like this: Microplane Zester/Grater Soft Touch : Target Mobile and save yourself 20 bucks. Seriously. $35 for a grater is highway robbery.

This is the one I have...highly recommend...just used it a little while ago to grate fresh ginger (which I keep in the freezer for easy grating) into my green smoothie for tomorrow's breakfast. Yummy!

It does seem a bit stiff but I don't have a grater. Since I'm baking and cooking more, it seems like a good tool to have. But if I can get a grater that has a side to zest, I'll go that route.

Microplane for me as well. My original one is still going strong while a friend who bought a cheaper one has had to replace it three times now.

Ginger in your smoothie!!??? I hadn't thought of that. I have some fresh ginger wanting to use it before it expires. Great idea....thanks.

I have a zester, grater, and mandoline. I'll see what is the easiest to use.

try this: spinach (or cabbage), mint, parsely, pineapple, ginger. YUMMY!!!

and to keep your ginger longer put it in a freezer bag and freeze it.

I saw the cutest little magic marker-sized zester in the produce area in the supermarket yesterday. $4. How can you go wrong??
