VTmom, to further the meditation idea, you can also add a technique called "creative visualization." It can both calm your fears and help lead to a positive outcome. It doesn't have to be as new age-y as it sounds, and there is no right way to do it. Use your meditation app to get into a very relaxed state. Once you're there, just visualize the outcome you want in your mind's eye. The more of your senses you involve, the better.

For instance, you could see yourself in your room before your procedure feeling calm and centered. Use your other senses to feel sunlight on your skin, whether the air in the room is warm or cool, hear the voices of those in the room with you and the other beepy little medical machine noises, etc. If you want, you could then move on to the procedure itself, or skip that part if it doesn't feel good to you. Move on to visualize yourself after the procedure feeling strong and well and happy and surrounded by those who love you. Some people might go as far as seeing whatever drugs that were administered as tiny little "warriors" coursing throughout their system and destroying the cancerous cells.

There really is no right or wrong way. Whatever feels right to you IS what's right for you. Sending (((hugs))) and good vibes, and remember - you are Hokie strong!

Love the visualization suggestion coupled with the meditation. I'm glad I decided to post about this because all of you have been so helpful and thoughtful...thank you!

I can't help with any of your major questions. I had breast caner in 2005. Although a very aggressive form, I caught it early. Did not test positive for hormone receptors so only had to undergo radiation treatment, no chemo. I just wanted to pop in and send my hugs and best wishes to you. So many people beat this anymore so you can too. I am now 8 years cancer free.

My lymph nodes were tested and found not to be cancerous. I will say that I did have a tingling sensation in that arm for a long time after the surgery, though it eventually subsided.

Anyway, sending my thoughts and prayers to you.

I can't wait for you to get this surgery and reconstruction overwith so you can start your recovery and the rest of your life.

Still thinking of you. I told my 8 y/o daughter about you bc we just read a book for kids about breast cancer (The Lemonade Club, I think it's called). She is thinking of you, too.

You have a flat-out AMAZING attitude, VTmom. Your students are really lucky because this is serious role model stuff.

I'm with SL - I hope the time before recovery goes by as quickly as possible for you so you can get back to just living.

I remember I hid the drains in the pockets of my cargo shorts and went out on a date. I was moving a lil slow and didn't want to give him a hug but the guy had no idea!

Curlypearl beat me to it, but the sentiments are just as strong.

You are going to fly through this, and every step in the process. Whatever happens, you will handle it and you'll move on to the next. Before you know it, you'll be on the other end of this remarkable journey, so undeserved but ultimately so very doable. And you'll be amazed.

Please stop in and give us an update, but only when you're up to it (and not one moment sooner).

Rebecca

I'm sorry that you're dealing with breast cancer. My mom had 6 months of chemo & never stopped working. She had a mastectomy during Christmas break so she was back at work after the break was finished. The only time she missed work was when she had to leave work to have a chemo treatment. She never got a cold & must of her students were sick that year. The only way one would have known she was taking chemo was because her nails turned black & she lost her hair everywhere.

I'm thinking of you today. I hope the surgery is unremarkable and the healing goes well and quickly. I hope the worst you experience is minor discomfort and boredom. Please let us know how you are when you're up to it.
