Teacher troubles

Like Tree7Likes

I'm about to start my senior year of high school in a few weeks and there's this teacher that I know doesn't like me. She's also the teacher that basically decides on whether you graduate or not. Her grading system is very biased so I know I'm not going to get very good grades. Everyone who has had her tells me to basically kiss her butt so she'll like me, but I'm not comfortable with that idea. I don't think I should have to kiss up to her to be able to graduate essentially, it's wrong for her to be so biased on how she grades so why should I have to change so I graduate?

Ideas, experiences, thoughts? I could use anything right about now

How do you know she doesn't like you and why do you think that?
From Michael Berg:

Every person has a unique connection to the Creator that can never be extinguished, and every person has a great soul that can manifest important things in our world. To make a person feel less than they are because of something inside themselves, be it faith, race, or sexual orientation, is the greatest sin of all."
I would just plan to bring my A game (as you always should) and not worry about it yet. Once the semester begins, and if you notice something obviously amiss with her grading, you can always request a one-on-one mtg with her or an appointment w/ the principal or vice principal.

Why do you believe this particular teacher has more authority to decide whether or not you graduate? Is she a dean or something? What subject does she teach?

I'm not sure you mean by "kissing her ass" but producing work and behaving in (professional) manner that pleases your teacher, professor or boss is a part of achieving success.

Try not to go in with a chip on your shoulder. You don't have to like this teacher or her class. Focus on the bigger picture which is graduating and moving beyond high school.

I had a teacher in 7th grade that was feared by everyone. She was a spinster and would never give 100%. The highest grade you could get was a 98% and that was rare for her. My sister was very smart, so she liked her, but didn't expect much from me. When I started her class she looked me up and down and asked me if I could live up to my sister's standards. I told her I would try my best. She just scowled and said "I'll see." Fortunately, I did very well and got a 98% on my 1st project. She treated me very nice after that, but one night I went to her house with a group of kids and pulled up all her prize flowers.

She was more mean to the respectful kids than the rude ones. I remember rolling up my pants and she yelled at while a girl had on short-shorts.

The way to deal with teachers like this is to just ignore them and complete the school work she gives you to the best of your ability. Don't talk to her unless she asks you a question.
I hate to say it but I'd probably start kissing her ass. I had a teacher in college that hated me because I didn't visit him in his off campus art studio or fawn all over him after class. Yeah, it was all on him, but that didn't matter when grades came out. After all the trouble I had to go through to get my grade raised, it would have been easier to just suck it up and go to his damned studio. Figuring this out made similar situations easier for me when I entered the business world.

In the real world, there will be people you need to suck up to. You might as well start now.

I'm a teacher(and have been a Senior English teacher twice) I am going to be honest and say it is so much easier to catch a high school teacher doing some dirt and have it corrected with interference from the administration combined with parent power because there is SO MUCH Red Tape. As a result I doubt she may pull a fast one with lowering your grade by full letters. If there is a grade that even looks funny grab another students' work and compare before you press the issue. I did rubrics for papers and I graded blindly(ie had students put Id numbers on their papers instead of names) so I would have no bias when grading and the student could see why they got the grade they got and none could say Ms. E graded me hard b/c she doesn't lie me. So hopefully she will use those. Now when u get to college and the professor pulls that crap, MY GOD!!!

**FYI one of those English teachers who will post a message to the board w/ a grammatical error and not give a flip. Didn't pick the major and love it for the grammar*maniacal laugh, maniacal laugh*

I'm not telling her to have sex with someone against her will. I'm telling her to try to get to know this woman and be nice to her so there won't be anything to stand in her way of graduating.

I can't remember how old you are, but if you're 35 or under, it explains a lot.

Part of being an adult is learning to choose your battles and get along with people in authority or higher up than you. If you want to be confrontational and difficult, fine. You may even be right - but it will rarely get you what you want.

Yes, I absolutely would encourage a student to blow the whistle on a teacher who is behaving unethically! Why should this teacher be allowed to torment her students (if that's what's going on)?

Still hoping you're kidding :P
