New Miss America

I flipped on the Miss America pageant last night just as the evening gown segment started. I watched all the finalists in their gowns. When Miss New York walked out, I thought what a stunning gown! It wasn't your typical pageant style gown. It was classy, sexy and sophisticated. On top of that I thought she was a beautiful woman. Then I loved her talent when she did her Bollywood dance. Although I only saw three of the answers for the final five, she was the only one who gave a good answer for the question she was asked (am always amazed how off the track of the real topic some of these contestants get with their answers). I kept thinking I hope she wins. I did think to myself I wonder how many people are against her winning because she is of Indian descent (although she is American born and not a Muslim). Today I see the negative tweets started as soon as they crowned her Miss America. What a shame. She is a beautiful intelligent AMERICAN woman who deserves the win as much as any of the other contestants.

I wholly agree. This country is a melting pot, and everyone deserves a chance.

i was just coming here to talk about this; i cannot believe the things people are saying.

:sad5:

What were the negative tweets saying? I'm confused...Indians aren't Muslim.

rou, You always like to critique the gowns for the Oscars, etc. What did you think of her yellow gown? I thought it was absolutely gorgeous!!

The majority are not, but it's the next biggest religion in India.

No different than the US! LOL

OK, in the US Muslims are third. But either way, it's not a "Muslim country." And even if it were, Islam =/= Taliban.

Ugh we've had this conversation before. Ppl are so ignorant.

I did not watch the pageant last night, but I did see a clip about it on GMA, and they were talking about some negative things being said. It is a shame. From what I saw she looked put together, and her talent was good. Again, I can't compare to other performances.

Controversy after a pageant is becoming a popular thing. When I was researching my genealogy, and looking at some area's in Russia/Siberia I came across a recent article titled "A Gypsy Woman Cannot Be The Face Of Russia". It was full of vinegar and had some rather nasty comments. Some people don't care what they say or why they say it on line.

Yea I know (just informing in case, some people forget there is a sizeable muslim population in India). I didn't realize the hatred was religious based but just regular old racisim. What's new and is it really surprising lol. I think stuff like this has happened with beauty pageants before, even though I think pageants are dumb in general.

Vanessa Williams really caught hell back in the day. But fortunately, a little less for Suzette Charles.

The Media was all over Vanessa, but the release of nudey shots will get you every time.

rouquinne 09-16-2013 10:15 AM

:disgust:

They should've named an American Miss America...she's Muslim therefore Obama should be happy...She's Miss 7/11... etc etc.

Some Indians are Muslims btw...

ETA: Sorry, I see most of this was already covered.

Here's a look back at some of the top pageant scandals vs people being virtual a**holes (and I do not doubt that some are just trying to get a rise).

A Lot Of People Are Very Upset That An Indian-American Woman Won The Miss America Pageant

Vanessa Williams got caught up in controversy only because she had posed nude and the pictures came out after she won. It had nothing to do with her race.

Untrue. The pictures didn't come out for almost a year into her Miss America reign. But immediately upon her winning the title, she was the subject of gossip and slurs. Ugh, I remember listening to it on Howard Stern :angry5:

claudine191 09-16-2013 11:30 AM

Wow - has Howard Stern been around that long?

I remember when Vanessa Williams won. She was so gorgeous. Still is.

Josephine 09-16-2013 11:50 AM

Wow so this is all over the news and my fb feed. This reminds me of when snoop dogg got mad at girls gone wild because he wanted more nonwhite boobies on there. In my opinion, who the hell cares. Miss America(white or not) doesn't represent most Americans so this is all stupid.

Unfortunately. The proverbial rusty penny that keeps turning up.:-?
