It's 1am and my neighbor's dog won't stop barking

Like Tree4Likes

That freaking dog has been barking for hours. It's past 1am and it just won't stop. I can't sleep. It's a German shepherd so it's very loud. And by neighbor I mean across the hall from me in a building with paper thin walls. What the hell can I do?! I banged on their door and left them a not so friendly note attached to it since they are obviously not home or are dead. ARGHHHH!!!

I know it won't help tonight but speak to your land lords or property managers tomorrow.

You can also look at your local noise ordinance and see if it contains any clauses about dogs. You need to make sure you look at the correct ordinance. They are often spilt or vary between county or city/town jurisdiction. We no longer cover dogs in ours. Officers really can't do much. It's not as if the dog listens to them either, but your area might or animal control might be over that issue. Find out the specifics and go from there. You can file a complaint with the proper agency, if allowed.
When I hear terms like "hipster" I think, who told cliques they could leave high school??

PS- I applaud you for knocking on their door and leaving a note. That might do the trick, sadly not tonight, but in the future... Most people refuse to do that anymore, and it would be my first step before I told someone else.

Thank you fifi. I'm hoping it'll make them aware of it for the future. This is not the first time it's happened. If it happens again I will complain to my landlord. Just last night someone was smoking in the hallway and stunk up the building (we only have 8 apartments here) and my landlord texted everyone this morning warning us not to do it. So hopefully he would do something about this too. But, he's not exactly a responsible landlord. I have a hole in my ceiling since November 5th from sewer water pouring in my bedroom that he has yet to fix after 4 emails and text messages that I've sent him. He's ignored all of them

^ That is not good at all!

Not a problem! I hope the issue will resolve itself after your letter. If not, don't be afraid to go over the landlords head if need be. I absolutely would if the leak does not get fixed. It's a health and safety hazard.

Wish you had some ear plugs :-/

I'm dealing with a similar situation. It's very frustrating and I couldn't take it anymore. I called the non emergency line to the police station and they were happy to send an officer by to warn them. If the people aren't home, they are happy to leave a warning on their door. Depending on the number of complaints, they will start getting fines if it continues. No one has to put up with that.

Don't get me wrong, I love love LOVE dogs. I just don't like certain dog owners who don't care about the people who live around them.

I understand.

I had a friend who would tie out her puppy and let it bark in anxiety all day. The poor thing was frantic. So glad she moved.

He only seems to do it when they are not home I think. I went to bed at 2am and he was still barking

They may not be aware. My dog had separation anxiety and used to bark a lot and occasionally become destructive, shredding pillows and trying to chew throught doors and walls when I left. I knew he was destructive but I didn't know why at first. And I had no idea that he barked. It was only after one night thatI left him outside on my fenced-in patio while I took a 30 min trip to the store and I got reported to the complex manager for letting my dog bark nonstop, that realized he had that tendency. I just left him outside bc the weather was so nice and I thought he would enjoy it. I had no idea he would bark or disturb the neighbors...bc he was never noisy w/ me.

I would have appreciated the neighbor just telling me about it rather than reporting me and being all mad. It had been only a one-time thing. Sometimes ppl don't know...but once they do they can take steps to improve the situation.

(But as an aside...is the apt they live in just a small one-level unit? Keeping a GSD in a small apt like that just seems cruel to me...unless they take him/her out A LOT.)

Yes it's a one bedroom apt and I left them a note. Also spider, my previous landlord never came after me for my breaking the lease. In fact, he has ripped off other tenants before as well I just found out. So I am taking him to court. He never sent me a letter or anything about my security deposit despite my requesting it, and it has been over 2 months now. Legally he has to give it back or tell me why he isn't within a reasonable amount of time. 2+ months is not

Could it be this dog?

Seriously, I don't blame the dog. I blame the owners. Pets need attention, much like children. Jim and I would love to get a Yorkie or 2, but we realize that we are not home enough for a pet. We have 3 humming birds and a betta fish. They are not much on cuddling, but they are happy. I would definitley talk to the owner/s of the dog and if they aren't willing to do anything then talk to the landlord. I lived in a house where my next door neighbor had two big dogs left outside at night and barked into the wee hours. I finally had to report them to the HO and they warned them and the problem was taken care of.
From Michael Berg:

Every person has a unique connection to the Creator that can never be extinguished, and every person has a great soul that can manifest important things in our world. To make a person feel less than they are because of something inside themselves, be it faith, race, or sexual orientation, is the greatest sin of all."
Unless someone told me, I would have no idea if Finlay barked when I was gone (I assume he doesn't). But, recently we were chatting with a new dog (some sort of standard poodle mix) and I said to her dad "oh Quincy always says Hi when we walk by the door" - "she barks???" - "yes, just one or two to let us know she's there" - he was very worried but I reassured him he wasn't an issue. (when they first moved in, she barked more, but now she's used to the noises, I assume).

He got the address in the letter that was sent to him via certified mail. Yes I left early, but I would not have done so if he had not stolen from me. He is the one who broke the lease.

Again, hope your letter to the owners works. If not, you know your options. It is crappy that they leave a dog of that size and breed in a one bedroom apartment. I know it can't be helped sometime, but they are better suited for larger areas. I feel for the dog but I also feel for people who can not get any sleep. Sometimes that happens, night after night, with the owners doing nothing. Doggie doesn't have to get up and go to work. Lol

They left a note on their door apologizing for the dog! They said they won't leave him alone for as long as they did and thanked the "anonymous" person for letting them know. yay!

Good to know some dog owners actually care about their pets.

I have a neighbour whose dog has separation anxiety so they got a kitten. However if the now cat goes out while the owners are also out the dog barks occassionally until the cat comes back in. (Cats in the UK are allowed to come and go as they please if possible.)

This is so much better than before when she would continously whine like someone was hurting her. It was extremely distressing to hear.
