Job situation

Like Tree23Likes

I'm sorry I never returned to this thread until now, but I want to thank you all again for your input. I felt that I needed to step away and stop talking negatively about this job, considering that I don't even have it yet. Given all the apparent "bad luck" I've had surrounding my job hunt, I almost felt that I was going to "jinx" it with all my negative self-talk - yes, ridiculous, I know, but in my critical situation, I don't want to tempt fate. My anxiety spiked on that following Monday because the area director hadn't contact me as promised (again), even after I sent him an email around 2 pm. However, at 5pm, he finally responded with a "tentative offer" pending completion and approval of the background check. I'm now waiting to hear the results - frustrated because two holidays have occurred during this process, further slowing the wheels of progress.

My financial situation is so critical that I absolutely will make this work if given the opportunity. This waiting is killing me, though. I'll update as soon as I hear something.

Thinking of you! Even if it's not ideal, it's income and one day you'll find something else.

I have certainly felt this way, especially after going through 7 years of college /3 degrees later. I felt like such a failure when I first graduated because I couldn't find anyone to hire me. I kept getting the whole "you're not qualified," or you're "overqualified" bit and rejected. I finally accepted a position with a bank doing something I completely hated. I disliked the atmosphere, the type of job, and even the people I worked with (some really mean people), but I kept telling myself that it was a job with benefits that paid well, and that helped pay the bills. I have moved on since then, and although I am happy in my current position, I still feel like I could do more. When I have days like this, I remind myself that every opportunity is an experience and can help better us by teaching us new skills and opening new doors. And I remind myself of all the people who wish they had a job and how lucky I really am. You have to think positively, even though I know that can be extremely difficult. Have faith and best of luck!

Thanks, Danigirl88, you're absolutely right! Had I adopted that attitude years ago, I wouldn't be where I am today. I'm glad you're in a more content place now.

But, I do have what I believe to be good news. After having a very dark day yesterday and not hearing anything, I took the initiative today and emailed the district manager asking if he'd heard any word on the background check. After about an hour he emailed me back to let me know that he was in a meeting but would be calling me tonight or tomorrow to discuss training! While that sounds like "all systems go" to me, I'm still reserving my joyous outburst for after we actually speak. I cannot believe how important this little job has become to my family's survival. It is literally a financial lifeline for us.

I wish there were some way to significantly raise awareness about the plight of the middle-aged, long-term unemployed and how we are struggling to survive because no one will give us chance.

And I completely agree with you about raising awareness. I think this economy is extremely difficult. So many people are fighting to survive and it shouldn't be like that. I wish I had my own business and could just hire those that were struggling.

Training starts Monday!

College starts Tuesday!

I'm not going to lie...I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed - grateful, but overwhelmed. Much to do before Monday (new [to me] car, work clothes/shoes, school books and supplies, familiarize myself with campuses and driving routes [college is in a different city and has two campuses 14 miles apart.])

Thanks, all, for the support!

I feel so blessed right now. Four days ago, I experienced one of the darkest days of my life because I felt truly hopeless. What a difference a few days has made. I wish I could help others struggling with a devastating job loss and the sequelae - much like Danigirl88 mentioned above: Open a business and staff it with the knowledgeable, experienced older workers who have slipped through the cracks the recession left in our workforce.
