I've decided that I'll never get down to my original weight, and I'm OK with that--After all, 8 pounds 2 oz. is just not realistic.
I love Alegria shoes. Utterly comfortable, and great patterns.

I just got a call from my dad.....his sister-in-law, who inherited the family land from his brother, just sold all the timber. I almost collapsed when I got the news. She is in her 90s, and some guy from the logging company has been pursuing her relentlessly for the last 2-3 years, calling her endlessly, driving all the way to her home in D.C. from time to time, finally showing up at her house with a check for some unknown sum.

She never had hardly any contact with any of us.....nobody has seen hide nor hair of her in decades. My dad, his sister and the rest of us have lived here all our lives...my dad keeps everything cut down, mown and maintained. My dad owns the land our house sits on but SHE owns the rest. We were one of the only land-owning Black families in this area for a long time when the norm was for Black people to be sharecroppers....why did it even pass down to HER and not the actual family???

The entire landscape in all 4 directions will be completely razed, so my dad was thoughtful enough to call me and my sisters in an attempt to prepare us for the shock when we come to visit. He himself had no idea until he saw logging trucks appear at our house.

I have 35 first cousins on my dad's side (just to give an idea of how many family members there are)....yet I know nobody will even bother to try and buy the land back to perhaps stop this.

I just can't.......

It's here! It's here! The Cottage Bread book arrived today, and I've already been looking at blinis............

And, ta da! I finally, finally, washed every single piece of cutlery in my big sink. This is a big deal because I keep three sets going at once rather than have to do dishes all the time. So, things can sit for a while. But not this time, Baby! Hah!

I don't know how mentally competent she is....I don't know how legal any of the process was. Whoever the individual was that orchestrated all this--his behavior sounds very predatory. Then she had nerve to tell the loggers to "talk to my dad" AFTER the sale?! FOR F*CKKIN WHAT???!? She has no children....I don't know if she has any living family. I guess she did all of this alone?! WTF!!!

And then she has always been the hatefullest, nastiest b***h ever. She's not even in the f*cking family. I just can't believe this is happening....almost 25 acres. My dad and uncle say the check was probably for a mere pittance of what it's actually worth. Nobody knows who the land passes to after she (if she ever) dies. I just can't with any of this.

Nobody's even SEEN her around these parts in decades. DECADES!!!!! Meanwhile, the place would have gone completely to pot if it wasn't for my dad (and my aunt and uncle who both passed away a few years ago. They lived on the property, too.)

My sister had finally gotten enough money together to buy a place....my sister (a single mom, btw) called her because she was interested in buying a small plot of the family land for a mobile home. Know what my "aunt" told her? She "wasn't in the mood to be selling no land," and HUNG UP ON HER!!!! WTF!!!!!! The B*TCH!!!!

I truly was not prepared to be THIS upset.....it's like somebody called me and told me someone died. It was bad enough driving the back roads on the way home and seeing places I grew up in ravaged beyond recognition.

I just talked to my youngest sister, and she revealed how upset many of the siblings were that she inherited the family farm. No sh*t.

I am too done, just done. I'm about to head out and get something to eat (even though I have homework waiting) Just to try and get myself together.
^^^ so sad, sinistral.

Dumb rant but yesterday I took my daughter to an Easter egg hunt put on by my husband's work. Despite the fact that we had to RSVP, they didn't have nearly enough eggs for all the little ones that were there. My daughter and the other 1-3 year olds each got like two eggs a piece. Maybe because they didn't understand they had to be fast enough picking them up to beat out the adult lady who picked up about 9 or 10 for her own little boy who was too young to do it himself...OMG, some people just are clueless.

My dad called me back because he's worried about us....

...word is getting back to the siblings now and they are (understandably) very upset. My "aunt" swears that she told the man (company rep, whatever) to discuss everything with my dad in person before she made a final decision, and that he came by my parents' house a couple of times, but no one was home.

We think that actually DID happen because he described to my "aunt" what their vehicles looked like, etc. She swears she tried to call my dad many times about this, but could "never get through". I'm like "WTF number were you calling?" My parents have had the same telephone number since I was born 40 years ago.

My dad came home from work one day and there was a chaos of logging trucks, busily cutting down all the trees. I can't imagine the shock he must have felt.

He says he is going to look into the whole land issue over the next few weeks and see what he can find out. I wish the family could all get together and purchase it, just so it would be out of her hands for good.

That's awful sinistral. I can't imagine what that would be like.

Also, those poor trees. Are the company just wanting the wood? What are they going to do with the land when they've chopped all the trees down? Move on to the next vulnerable landowner?

(((hugs)))

They leave the land to just......sit. It looks HORRIBLE after it's just done. So messy. Just acres and acres of devastation.

Even as it regrows, it looks awful because among all the young re-growing trees is an awful lot of weeds and brush. It takes a while for it to get back to the point where you can walk through it w/out a machete.

Sometimes they "re-seed" what they've done.....with pine trees. All pines. Not even different varieties of pines, it ...just the same type of generic pines.

Eventually my entire county back home will have NO other tree varieties growing....except pines. There might be a few odd birch/oaks left in peoples' yards.......but nowadays I've noticed that people clear out the entire plot of virtually all greenery before they set up their mobile home/build their house. They'll just have a lone building sitting in the middle of nowhere...not even any flowers or bushes. What's the point of even moving to "the country" if it's just barren dust and fields???

My dad's neighbor is familiar with the logging company and he says at least they have a good reputation with reseeding. I guess.

There are areas back home where they cut them all down, re-seed, and years later when the trees get tall enough, come through and cut them all down again.

It has gotten a LOT worse in recent years. And yes you are right---they just move on to the next landowner. My dad and uncle say that 1 truckload of trees is about $1,100....and that my "aunt's" check was probably for no more than $7-$8,000....that's for 25 acres of forest that's never been cut in mine, my dad's, or his siblings' lifetime. And my dad's the youngest of 13. She said it "sounded like a good price"--YOU HAVE NO IDEA OF WHAT SOMETHING LIKE THAT COSTS!!! HOW WOULD YOU KNOW WHAT "A GOOD PRICE" WOULD BE?!? She really got shafted.

Thanks for the encouraging posts because I am truly having a hard time with this. And it helps to vent about it here. Everybody else I know will think "they're just stupid trees".

There were turkey, deer, owls, raccoons, and fish b/c a creek runs through the back part....all of that was just as much my HOME as the actual house was. I spent just as much time out there as I did my yard. My dad used to make traps for fish and crayfish in the creek, hell that creek practically fed us. He used to find tons of arrowheads as a kid, and I've found some myself. It's not just a really deep connection to just ME but to all the family, for all their interfamilial problems. My sisters are just as upset as I am which makes me feel a little better.

I'm trying.....trying not to judge but her being a b*tch by nature, and what she did to my sister, does not tip the scales in her favor. I'm working on school assignments right now, so it keeps my mind occupied.

you can't stand my brooding when you make me sit for two hours in the shared activities as the girl you like-knowing full well how I feel about you!!!! Really? All I can say right now is......
I ain't thirsty. There's plenty of fish in the sea, but I don't want all of them, can I have some standards? Or do we just have to settle, for someone's who meh and will do.
