Why do I attract strays? I swear the local humane society is going to start to think I'm a very unsuccessful backyard breeder. Oh well, another hot meal and a scrub bath and off to the humane society with this little dust mop puppy.

We found a Siamese kitten under the porch, but we're bottle feeding it and I think my roommate wants to keep it. It thinks my poor Bigby is a toy. He's feeling stressed.

In all seriousness, handrearing a kitten is no easy task. I would highly recommend researching before undertaking it. The difference between good house cat and a feral cat is it's mother and what she taught them and it takes a lot of work as a human to reproduce.

Don't worry Cympreni, I've raised kittens before (my mother was afflicted with the hobo mark as well), I only do it because my humane society's resources are already stretched thin and are understaffed, especially with kitten season well underway. I can't actually foster, being a rental property, so I usually get the kitties on solid food and litterbox trained before passing them on. I passed on a brother and sister a couple weeks ago.

@Ninja, I found a beagle a few months ago dead of winter, huddling under my car on my way to work. He too was given to the humane society full of beef and gravy and smelling faintly of coconut. I think I definitely got the hobo mark

Thank you for sharing that, Mystic. I hate it when people look at me like I'm nuts for caring for animals.
I know Ninja, I feel the same way when people find out that I buy wet dog food whenever it's on sale, even though I've never owned a dog.

I too am a regular at the humane society. I sometimes take a step further and throw in a vet check-up. Our humane society is a kill shelter, and they have limited resourses and foster homes so animals do get put down sometimes for being sicker than they can to treat. I have a non-profit vet about 20 miles away, so it's not that big of a deal for us to drive them down there.

I actually have a orphan kitten right now we've been taking care of for the last month. She just got her first shots a few weeks ago.
Ouch.

How do you deal with a bully at work?
- Seek first to understand, then to be understood.
- Character is how you treat those who can do nothing for you.

Sigh, I heard that the daughter of the lady who cleans our office is getting her dental surgery done for nothing. She had my boss sign a form which says she's never worked with her mom in the office so her medical card will pay for it. How a healthy 19-year-old plus her younger sister and mother are all on free health ins. is beyond me. My boss signed the form when it was a lie b/c the mom went hysterical. He had to know it was a lie b/c he was the one told the welfare agent in the first place that the family cleaned the office.

It makes me angry I'm probably going to need dental surgery and can't get any kind of financial assistance other than food stamps even though I meet poverty guidelines. I work my (*& off in jobs I hate and it gets me nowhere when these people for whatever reason get free rides. How is this woman getting welfare when the only minor child she has is 17? None of them have disabilities that I know of. I was told the only way in this state to get help with health ins. is to have a baby or be permanently disabled. The 19-year-old in question worked at Rally's for months and mysteriously quit before the dental issue came up - the reason was her eyes bothered her and she couldn't read the orders well enough. She can see well enough to drive and clean our office. Our system is so ridiculous.

Some people complain about that, but I see it as no different than your family doctor.

I'm trying to resist being a debby downer right now with some people being naively idealistic about changing an old injustice they just discovered. They act as though they're the first ones to try, and all they have to do to fix it is write a few letters. It's kinda annoying hearing them go on, or maybe I'm just too jaded.
