It's pretty simple. Take your meat, which is of course seasoned Dominican style (heh), brown it (but not really, since the meat is too much for the pot and will end up steaming), cover and let cook until the water in the pot cooks out, at which point, brown it a bit. Add chicken (or some do beef apparently) bouillon (hey, I don't like it, but we're being authentic here, and just try to separate a Dominican from their caldito de pollo), let that sauté a bit, then add water, bring to a boil, and add your peeled and cut Dominican root vegetables (yuca, plantains, yautia, mapuey, etc), cilantro and culantro if you have it, corn, and anything else you may be used to since people have their own individual additions to it, and some salt, though remember, not too much since this will reduce. Simmer until meat is tender and stew sufficiently thickened. Adjust salt. Add jugo de naranja agria to taste, or lime juice if you can't get that. Chef-fy addition would be some freshly chopped cilantro to garnish.

Another example of my mother's awesome comforting abilities:
Asks me again where my job is and I tell her it's pretty much a five minute walk from the Vernon-Jackson stop. Proceeds to go on about how it's a bad unsafe neighborhood, better hope I don't get killed or raped.
And really, as is I keep the anxiety I feel about starting jobs to myself. Were I to express anxiety, she'd basically proceed to agree with me about what a poor choice I made. Without saying anything, I get "why don't you try to get a job at a more established/well-known place" or "that's too little money". It doesn't matter how many times I've told her she really has no understanding of what my industry is like.
Seriously, I feel insecure and awful enough about my choices of late. This doesn't help.

It's not funny to make jokes about beating babies and say the Bible says not to spare the rod. You might think your joke is hilarious, but there are lots of people who really do believe that and injure and even kill their infants. You're not funny; you're just an idiot, and the fact that you got mad because people called you out for your stupid attempt at humor makes me wonder if it was a joke at all.

I got a message from some mediation firm yesterday asking to speak to my sister about passing some bad check who knows how many years ago. They want to avoid going to court with her. They specifically mentioned that it happened in New York. She hasn't lived in the state for 8 years. I called them back today to give them the number she actually can be reached at and asked them exactly where did they get my number from. I was told that I'm listed in some government database as a relative. I get calls from creditors and mediators all the time regarding my mother about bad checks, debts she defaulted on and so forth and now my sister's gotten in on the act. If there was a legal way to disown them, I would, because I'm tired of being held responsible for their ****.
