I usually make staff meals because otherwise there would be a lot of half-assed pasta with cream and lots of fried food. I nag the hell out of chefs to order me stuff for it (I explained to them that no self-respecting Dominican eats par-cooked rice, so please to order the Jasmine rice). lol:

I've never worked in a place where people were charged for staff meal, but it's supposed to go towards better food than that! Those are things strictly for emergencies (cooks are just too swamped to make anything). Even this past summer job (where those foods made their most frequent appearances out of any place I've worked) we still had plenty of meals actually cooked by one of the sous chefs.
I've worked in places where I had to pull family meal out of thin air because they just didn't order anything and we had nothing left over that we could use. Frozen prepared foods are basically a luxury item that many places can't afford/aren't willing to buy when something could be made from already paid-for product.

I had no understanding of it, but sadly the owner/chef, a very nice man who moved here from PA, left too many decisions up to the manager (meals being one, and paying for them seems to be common here). This ended up being a fatal error in judgement.

He bought the most historical house in town. One of the few original houses remaining on the main strip. It's a beautiful 2 story farm house. He set up an amazing herb garden and green house out back, remodeled the inside separating it into 5 different dining rooms (upstairs and downstairs) and a fantastic bar area. As I said before the menu was wonderful, and a big hit with tourists and locals alike.

Unfortunately his manager had a horrific attitude toward the staff. They were always polite, did their job extremely well, and along with the food were a large reason why customers returned. If the manager heard one of them say, "Y'all have a nice day", he would go ballistic! I understood the aesthetic reasoning of this, but these were ladies who worked in local diners. It was a hard habit to break and they were working on it. His mistake was screaming at them, in front of customers. Word of this quickly spread. After the leaves fall, the tourists go home... It was shut down by November.

It turned out the manager was embezzling money, as well. All around bad day. It was sad and I do miss the owner and food. One can only eat Bogarts so many times before saying, "My life sucks".

My phone is stuck on stupid. It's supposed to give me notifications when I get email, pm's from apps I have installed, texts, etc. Yet the only ones that show up are my emails, texts, missed calls. Maybe I need to send it to rehab.... Again.

Oh gosh. I just found out that an essay I haven't even started yet (and makes up 40% of my grade) is due two days before I thought it was... AKA next Wednesday. And I agreed to work all day that day. And happen to have another huge essay due right around the same time.

This does not bode well.

It's not "starting a new thread", so I don't see where an existing rule would be broken. Technically speaking, it should be okay, but in this uncertain climate, who the hell knows?

I actually saw something related to the Trayvon case I thought was interesting and thought of starting a thread but just hadn't got around to it, but you're right - it might be safer not to.

Being a halfway decent parent is work, and it’s challenging work. And it’s valuable work. But you are not the most important person in the world, you are not doing the hardest job in the world, and convincing yourself that you are is just silly. I mean, I’m not going to stop anyone who wants to say that, but they do look like a bit of a silly tit talking about how the fate of the ENTIRE WORLD rests on how s/he raises little Johnny. Little Johnny could vanish from the face of the world and it would keep on turnin’. That’s kind of the definition of, “not most important job/thing/person in the world”.
