Oh, they are delicious. My favorite of the muffins my friend Devin used to make at Soho House, and all those muffins were delicious! Batter, raspberry jam, dusting of cocoa, batter. Then when they're baked, another dusting of cocoa, plus powdered sugar and cinnamon. The combo just works so well!

No crumbly topping? It does sound wonderful though! Coffee cake always makes me think of going to my grandma's house. She always had coffee cake at the ready for breakfast.

Nope, not these. There were some streusel-topped muffins as well on the roster, but these were still my favorite of them all.

How does coffee cake batter differ from regular cake batter? More butter? Just curious.

Well, I mean, there are different types of cake, but there's no such thing as coffee cake batter. Coffee cake is a butter cake, so it's not particularly different than any other butter cake except that it usually has streusel topping. It's fairly dense and rich. It's perhaps more rich and dense than some other butter cakes, but a lot of cakes get classified as coffee cakes, with different amounts of fat and sugar and streusel sort of being the defining trait.
That's American coffee cake, though.

I tend to think of yeast-raised coffee cake, made with a rich dough, very lightly sweet, and streusel.

And of course, there's coffee cake made with laminated dough, which not as many people make anymore, but it's a pretty special treat.
