That is so true! Mr B-wavy and I don't travel much, so until recently we'd only ever experienced the southern coastal beaches. Last month my stepson got married in Rhode Island, and we were struck by the differences. I kept telling him "There's something different here!" and he thought I was crazy until I noticed and pointed out that we were standing on a beautiful, green lawn with normal vegetation and trees, AND we were within 50 feet of the beach. That wouldn't happen in the south. With southern beaches, the minute you're within a few blocks of the beach, all you see is concrete and sand. Totally different.

True.

Northeast beaches also have lighthouses, that you don't see elsewhere, and a lot of rocks. There's a lot of weather beaten wood, and rope - very fishing wharf looking.

Northeast beaches are home to me, so I have a fondness for those. While I think Caribbean beaches are absolutely beautiful, to me they represent 'vacation'.

Coffee and mango don't really go well together.

I'm not very good at packing... I've got like 25 shirts picked out for a 5 day trip.

I do plan to change a lot, but probably not 5 times a day...

Oh dear. Go to the website and sign up. You'll get 20% off coupons in the mail AND your email. Assuming they do it up there. Yep, you're in trouble.

Yep, my rules with them is to never buy anything at full price unless it is one of the super expensive brands that gets excluded from the coupons.

They also accept expired coupons, and will take one coupon per item in your order. I hoard the ones that come in the mail for that reason, then go and buy 10 things and use 10 coupons.

I hoard those coupons, too. I've got a drawer full and don't dare buy anything full price there! They also do $5 off a $15 purchase coupon which is handy. I've got some that probably expired 3 years ago and they still take them and I think that's an awesome policy for a store to have.

Iroc's avatar keeps showing up on everyone's posts. At the end of them, on sigs, on other people's avatars. More kooky iPhone antics for you!

My mother has never been to a beach in this country because she thinks they're too plain and not nice to look at and that the water looks murky. I told her the water's fine, just a different color, but yeah, I think beaches are too plain here. It's just the case when you grew up going to Caribbean ones.

Amneris, I miss getting a fresh coconut cut down from a tree and sipping the water while enjoying a cool breeze beneath a tree. That's something I can still remember what it feels like. Plus freshly fried fish!

I almost planned a trip to Cabrera, DR a couple years ago, but we ended up going somewhere else (in the States). Now I really want to go! Is it necessary to speak Spanish? Hubs knows a little, but nowhere near fluent.

Saria, my family is planning a reunion of sorts for next year, and everyone want to go to Punta Cana. I'll go if everyone else is going, but I resent spending my limited travel money to go someplace that's nothing but resorts. There are so many parts of the country that even those who grew up there haven't seen, but no, they want to go to tourist central.

Ha, my mom says she'll only go to Punta Cana as part of a tour, because one day she'd like to drive around the country, especially the south. My dad's family is from Montecristi. El Morro is a beautiful and very interesting beach and park. I used to go to the river (I think Río Guayubín) since it's a walk away from my grandparents' house.
I also wonder why Samaná, although tourist heavy compared to other places, doesn't get mentioned as much as Puerto Plata and Punta Cana. My mom loves Playa el Valle there. She says it has all these caves and falls where you can kind of hide away. She also loves Las Terrenas. And there's the whale-watching, too. Plus from Samaná you can travel to Cabrera and other parts of the east pretty easily.

It's definitely better if you speak Spanish, but you can do okay with basic Spanish.

Oh - the coconuts and the beach food, definitely!

Really? OMG, I'm everywhere! LOL

And I agree, the water is very murky. Sometimes I don't even swim in it. And its very cold. I do not like out beaches for swimming. Strolling, sitting and eating out by, that's pretty much it

The water is crystal clear in most of the lakes around here but it wasn't always that way. Lake Erie was super polluted when I was a kid. Didn't stop us from swimming then but it's much more enjoyable to swim in the clean clear water of today.
