Yesterday I woke up and felt like it was one of those days where I should just stay in bed. Went to court and had to stand down both my matters because I didn't have dates because the Crown was being slow... then got two miracle e-mails on both and was able to schedule both matters without further delay to the clients (or to me getting paid!) Came out of court and was approached totally randomly by a community activist who wanted the card of a lawyer of colour as he may have a number of clients for me. Got back to the office and got a referral for a cash client with a lucrative file who agreed to bring in a retainer on Monday. So I'm thinking my day turned out pretty well after all... until I got to court and had to run a bail that took over two hours and was denied and got to watch the family members crying.

I'm still smarting over that. There wasn't much I could have done and I did tell them that, but you always hope, and you always feel like you somehow failed.

There's something so dreadful about feeling a truly terrible song wash over you when you're helpless to avoid it, such as standing in line to pay for your pizza.

I find myself thinking "Why? Why did the Universe allow such a piece of absolute crap to not only be wriiten, but also performed to great acclaim?"

And I have no answer.

Wah! I hate it that we're not allowed to accept tips at work!

Like, I understand why. It's just annoying sometimes. I die a little bit inside every time I have to hand someone's cash back to them and say "Sorry! We can't accept tips! If you leave it, it'll just go in the register!"

My son works as a public defender and some of the cases he represents are simply heartbreaking. The very first one involved the mother accused of of torturing and abusing her 3 year old son to death (known as Baby Lollipops, for those of you living in Miami-Dade). He was so torn between compassion for the innocent child and his professional obligation to zealously advocate for his client, he nearly reconsidered his career choice. And it's no easier when the accused is innocent but has the deck stacked against him because of who he is.

Sometimes I wish he'd taken a job with a high-paying corporate firms like his classmates did, but then I know his work wouldn't be so gratifying.

I was in the candy aisle at Walmart this afternoon. I was buying thank you chocolate for the family of the guy who cut up some big branches for me last week.

Over the loudspeaker, I suddenly heard, "Mr. Ed, to the front end. Paging Mr. Ed to the front end."

So, me being me, I giggled, and launched into a routine: "Wilbur, you have to let me out. They need me at the front end. You know I'm a manager now. Buying my own hay and carrots, and all that. I worked my way up from field services. You know all that, Wilbur." By the end, I was laughing outright.

There was one other person in the aisle. Did she hear me? Did she ignore me? Could she not have seen the wealth of opportunity for humor? Is humor --- high or lowbrow ---unimportant to such a person?

I guess that's who I am now: a woman without an audience, making audible jokes about a talking horse from a dated sitcom.

Could be worse, I guess.

I have some good memories associated with that one actually. It's fun to sing drunk too.

Well, I like you, curlysue, but I'm afraid we'll have to agree to strongly disagree.

That one makes me think about knives.

(I have strong feelings about music.)

C'est la vie!

Music doesn't often make me stabby but on the rare occasion it does, I dislike the feeling very much. So I feel for you.

It certainly is stirring things up here. I am so glad I didn't have to go out. My allergies would be kicking my butt right now too.
