A view that promotes respect for and understanding of Republican voters who go to the polls and take active steps to restrict the rights of everyone who is not straight, white, and male is much easier to take when you aren’t someone for whom a vote for a ticket like Romney/Ryan is, at best, a total disregard for your autonomy, bodily integrity and personal security, and at worst a deeply personal attack on it. The reason this attitude among liberals is so insidiously dangerous is that in effect it actually CONTINUES the disrespect and dehumanization of women, people of color, LGBT people, etc. by portraying the Republican ideals that disrespect them as disembodied “personal opinions” that deserve respect and tolerance instead of what they actually are: the hateful and dangerous oppression of real human beings. Again, WE ARE HUMAN BEINGS, not intangible intellectual concepts open for debate and disagreement.

Finally, as a side note, I’d point out that the fault for partisan gridlock pretty objectively lies with the Republicans. Us leftists are all too familiar with the fact that Obama is willing to move right and to compromise ideals to get things done, believe me. Republican leadership, on the other hand, sat down in a meeting during Obama’s inauguration and declared that they would obstruct every single thing he tried to do in order to ensure that he would be a one-term president, regardless of whether or not they agreed with it and regardless of whether it was something that the American people needed.

So listen, yes, I respect that President Obama is going to have to work out ways to achieve bipartisanship, although considering the stance of the Republicans on that front thus far I can only wish him the best in that effort. But that doesn’t mean that I have to respect the Republican party or individual Republicans in my personal life or in my political advocacy. I respect those who respect me, and disrespect for me and for countless people that I love is openly and fundamentally enshrined in the Republican party platform. There is really nothing more to say.
