I love it when people try to pronounce Chinquapin. Every single time we are training young or non local part timer I ask them to give out a call that contains Chinquapin in the address.
I sit back and laugh. Then the phones ring and several people giving the newbie hell ensues. It's one of our few joys in life.
we have a school by that name in baltimore. everyone pronouces it as: chic-ka-pin.
so very wrong.
It's a doozie for people who have never seen it, and also because of the alternatives.
We have several of those. 75% of the roads or locations in my area have Cherokee names and they are pronounced in no way remotely close to the spellings. That and some places have a different local variation. It can be fun.
When I hear terms like "hipster" I think, who told cliques they could leave high school??
