Just had a total murrr moment in Spanish class! Except my scenario did not involve a sexy sexy.

We got our exam scores back today and beforehand everyone was like "OHHHHH MY GOSHHHHHHHH, that test was so hard!!!!!"
Um, I didn't think it was hard at all...

Then she handed our tests back and I had to scramble to hide mine because I may or may not have been the one to destroy the curve for everyone else. Lady, why you gotta write my score all giant like on the front page in orange pen?!?!

Our DMV uses this fancy face recognition software now. You're not allowed to smile in your picture anymore. You have to have your head back, perfectly vertical. I guess they couldn't afford a camera with a height adjustment. They want you to look straight ahead at a blue dot on the camera. The blue dot on me is about chest height. You can't just look down, you have to tilt your entire head so that you have a double chin. Remember you have to have your head back, so then you have this really awkward pose you have to hold for like a minute while the camera readies itself. And you can't have any hair at all. I'm one of those people who had their hair perpetually tucked behind their ears. I've been doing it for so long, my hair just stays like that. Just that teeny bit of hair across the corner of my forehead and the program freaks out and can't recognize me. I have to pull my hair all the way back in a way that I would never ever do in a million years because it looks god awful.

The end result is an official ID photo that only a computer can recognize. I am waiting for the day someone accuses me of having a fake ID because the picture is so bad.

They go through all this trouble for accuracy, then they let you lie out the wazoo about your weight. According to the DMV I have not gained a single lb since I was 15 years old, even when I got my licence renewed when I was 8 months pregnant.

I have never seen a school district cancel school as much as the one I live in now. Thank the lucky stars I no longer have anyone in school or I would be very annoyed. It's raining people. Your original 2 hour delay was fine. They are gonna make me start ranting about how school was never cancelled when I was going and how I had to walk blah blah blah.

OMG, all this beautiful truth about liberal feminism:

Quote:
no one is getting on YOU for wearing lipstick. they are getting on the system that forces women to wear lipstick, wear make up in general, which imposes extremely specific beauty standards on them since birth to the point where many live day by day at complete opposition with their true desires. there are women who enjoy wearing lipstick, but that does not change the fact that make up is in direct accordance with patriarchal beauty standards, and so while no one will criticize YOUR individual right to wear it, they will acknowledge that make up is not subversive, it is not a bold statement, it is not in deference to patriarchy entirely on the basis that it is your choice because conforming to beauty standards is a choice you will never be punished for.

make up, while libfems have a right to it, has been forced on and expected of all women for ages now, as has compliance to all beauty standards, no matter how grotesque they may become. when we encourage girls and women to remember that they can do without make up, that they do not need it, we are attempting to speak to the large portion of women who likely have not chosen make up, but have been coerced into it and now cannot imagine themselves without it. we are questioning beauty standards as they are - not punishing women for not resisting men but punishing men for forcing women into this position, and letting women know there IS another choice, they do not all have to fit the model of conventional femininity, although it is fine if they do (and we all know it’s fine, it’s currently the only way women are allowed to be)

that’s all there is to it. but libfems seem to take this as a personal attack and so the assumption that feminine women are being attacked for their gender role compliance takes root, and is naturally, totally off base.

either way, the criticism of liberal feminism doesn’t just boil down to make up.

liberal feminism created FEMEN, i don’t think i need to elaborate on that. liberal feminism believes women will be empowered through exposing more of their bodies to men, through taking off their clothes. and naturally, women may wear or not wear whatever they want, the problem is with framing an action as empowering when in reality you are simply enacting what has been expected of women for ages.

liberal feminism says sex work is empowering, ignoring the huge, vast majority of sex workers living in desolate circumstances, that they are often trafficked into this business. liberal feminism believes sex work is empowering because a small percentage of women have chosen it, ignoring society’s influence on our choices , and also how flawed the idea of any action being empowering simply because it is a choice is.

liberal feminism created the slut walk and the term ‘slut-shaming’. instead of saying, stop punishing women for expressing their sexuality, they said, we are sluts and we are proud, they made it so slut became a valid term and did not just individually reclaim the slur but reclaimed it for womankind as a whole - many women of color, due to hypersexualization, are not interested in being called sluts. many women are not comfortable with reclaiming that slur. when someone shames us for our sexuality, some of us don’t want to hear that we are being ‘slut-shamed’, that we are ‘sluts’ who are being shamed, but that we are women who need to be respected and are not receiving it.

liberal feminism believes the concept of making a choice is so subversive, that even choices women make that are completely and absolutely considered the norm suddenly become empowering. women who fit the conventional beauty and personality standards are defended to the death, it is on the top of everyone’s priority list to let these women be themselves, a luxury gender role non-conforming women never got, and no one seems to notice that no one is stopping them. the resentment a few women feel towards institutionalized femininity is nothing compared to the men who actively attack all women who dare to break out of their society’s standards, it does not have the social power or history behind it that would give it the same impact.

it is not enough to say that make up is fine, sex work is fine, etc, liberal feminism expects us to take it to another level. they expect us to see these actions, although they are in accordance with patriarchy, as empowering. liberal feminism does not even mention the women who may not feel comfortable in these standards and there is no movement for them, the second an action outside of patriarchal norms is framed as empowering, there are cries of ‘you’re shaming conventionally feminine women’.

it’s not enough to respect the choices of women who live up patriarchy’s standards, we are now expected to see them as subversive. note that not being subversive does not equal being morally limited or wrong - it’s just not subversive, it’s not uncommon, it’s not a statement, it’s not something rare or something that society doesn’t already encourage every day. and so it should not be depicted as such.
*passes out*

"liberal feminism created the slut walk"

actually, no... a bunch of post-liberal-feminist women in Toronto did in reaction to a very specific incident involving a representative of the police force in that city.

"liberal feminism believes the concept of making a choice is so subversive"

oh PUH-LEEZE...

TRUE liberal feminism, as i learned it in the 1970s, is about respecting the choices women make for themselves, no matter what that choice is. it is NOT about forcing any view of "feminism" on women!

there are still WAY more important things to worry about than whether or not my wearing lipstick and mascara means i'm buying into some patriarchy - wage parity, sexual freedom (and that includes wanting to reclaim the term "slut" or rejecting it as you see fit), and education for women and girls around the world - just for starters!

That's the point. There are unhealthy choices. There are "choices" that are completely influenced by a society that does not seek liberation and equality. For example, liberal feminism's support of BDSM.
The acceptance of the term "slut" implies that there are sluts and there is nothing wrong with it's opposed to there are no sluts.
Liberal feminism is the "don't offend anyone" brand of feminism. It spews nice-sounding words about "empowerment" while forgetting that the goal is liberation.
It's also the feminism of white women.

Unless it turns out that Seth Green acts like Oz in real life. I'll make allowances for Ozness.

My dad had an extended explosion of bile at me tonight, leading in with saying he's "sick of [me] being useless." **** that ****. He doesn't know the first thing about me and he's of no use to me either. The things he's invented about me are really screwing things up for me, though, because he makes up things I've done as well. Like apparently I've jumped to erroneous conclusions based on reading medical stuff on the internet? Despite that I avoid making conclusions about medical stuff and instead just compile lists of things to bring up to doctors. I assume this has to do with his random insistence that I distrust doctors because...reasons. Proven by...stuff.

He's absolutely going to think that somehow his "wake up call" (WTF you have no damn sense I'm not asleep you moron and stop saying "what you're doing" because depression isn't something people DO as an affront to their dumbass fathers), AKA unwitting attempt to drive me off a cliff, somehow caused me to get better once I've fully recovered and gotten the **** out of his house. He and my mother started in on trying to get me to tell them a day I'd talk to someone about getting on medications. Yeah, no, you don't get to decide my recovery methods. You are not doctors and I will not report to you like a child because that is not what I am. Being your child does not make me a child. And I am so much better than I am before. If you don't like the speed of my progress, either tell me to leave or just ****ing deal with it, because I don't heal on your schedule. Or mine, or anyone's.

My behavior. My BEHAVIOR? Apparently despite being something that they feel they can demand I get on pills for regardless of what I want, depression is not a disease but a choice made by lazy, worthless burdens because they hate their parents. Wow. I am not sitting back and enjoying a vacation in ****ing purgatory, you *******s. Also, holy transference, Batman. My dad brings up the topic yet again to say that part of "what I have" makes me keep bringing up subjects once they're closed. Which is totally how the topic came up again. Don't let my silence fool you. Then he says in a patronizing tone to remember recently when they both "had to" tell me to "let it go." Yep, I sure do - I misheard what Mom was asking, she got mad at me and I just stood there and stammered out apologies and when I asked her to confirm her initial request they both said "let it go" repeatedly, barely leaving room in between for my replies of "Okay...Okay...Okay!" as I backed out of the room.

I am too busy clawing my way out of this pit to deal with you two and your illusions about how mental health works. It's like if I broke my leg and you kept trying to make it heal faster by stabbing it. You. Are. Not. Helping. You morons. I don't have the energy to pretend you're all wise and ****. Especially you, Dad. There is FAR more wrong with your head than there ever could be with mine. I'm serious. I wish something could be done about your pathologically short fuse.
Sorry I didn't respond to your question about why I don't like Pink. She's getting too whiny. Every song is about the same thing. If she wants to whine, she should post on the Say It thread instead.

Same here. My driver's license photo is the most hideous thing ever. Until you look at my passport. I refuse to leave the country just so no one has to see that abomination (I will make as exception and visit Rou and Kayb and a few others tho).

i'm calling bull on this too.

and i'm going to say this...

you are WAY too young to know what you're talking about when you ignore the work of decades of feminist women and men - OF EVERY COLOUR - who came before, while you spout off reams of text from people and places you don't even provide citations for.

there is no "truth" in slamming people; liberal, conservative, somewhere in between, black, white, yellow, red, female OR MALE.

the only "truth" exists in ensuring that people have clean water, enough food to survive, a roof over their heads and education.

I have a familiy member who just keeps making bad choices. Really bad ones.

I just got an invitation to her baby shower. Her third one. She's giving it for herself. This baby (#3) was "an accident" like the others.

I'm really having a hard time finding anything nice or loving to offer. And, her registry is ridiculous - $300 stroller, $400 crib, $80 diaper bag, etc etc. I find it... just ridiculous.
