Only she knows what she feels, of course. And by posting what I did, I didn't mean to dismiss any valid issues about feminism and the very flawed world we live in.

I just felt, or rather.......believe I recognize, displacement.

Again, no harm or negative judgement intended. Even if we're not friends now, the fact that on a day when I felt truly wretched, a package of her wonderful goodies arrived and reminded me of the kindness possible in this world means I will always wish her well, regardless.

I'm so confused....

- How did this turn into a race issue?

- Why can't Rou and Saria have different opinions? They are different women from different generations with different backgrounds. Why can't they both have opinions about feminism?

- Who said they weren't concerned about the concerns of others in the world?

Personally, Saria's article didn't do it for me. I agree more with Rou and Fifi. But guess what, it doesn't have to be my cup of tea. It's not the perspective I have or the view I have of the world. If someone else agrees with the article, ok. What so wrong about that?
No, but really tho, got this Say It thread with pictures of centipedes all over the place, got the other Say It thread with pictures of Cumberbatch's face. I can't escape the horror!

Who said no one can have opinions? Because vehemently disagreeing doesn't at all imply that.

spring, my current house is the first place I've ever had house centipedes. I am not easily creeped out but these mothers make me jump every time. They are so so fast!!! And they get BIG!! And when you manage to hit one with a shoe or paper they turn to dust, like they are made of air. They are one of the few things I kill instead of just putting them outside. I just can't take them being around.

"liberal feminism created the slut walk"

actually, no... a bunch of post-liberal-feminist women in Toronto did in reaction to a very specific incident involving a representative of the police force in that city.

"liberal feminism believes the concept of making a choice is so subversive"

oh PUH-LEEZE...

TRUE liberal feminism, as i learned it in the 1970s, is about respecting the choices women make for themselves, no matter what that choice is. it is NOT about forcing any view of "feminism" on women!

there are still WAY more important things to worry about than whether or not my wearing lipstick and mascara means i'm buying into some patriarchy - wage parity, sexual freedom (and that includes wanting to reclaim the term "slut" or rejecting it as you see fit), and education for women and girls around the world - just for starters!

This is a LUXURY that white, middle-class, western women have and others don't. You guys can agonize about whether to have kids, whether to get married, whether to take his name, whether to be a stay-at-home parent, whether to wear a white wedding dress, what to wear to work and whether it's "slutty", whether to wear makeup etc. All the other women in the world have it forced on them what to wear, who and when to marry, to have kid after kid.... or they nominally make those choices but are burdened with a disproportionate share of the household responsibilities, or they technically have those choices but in reality they are just illusions. And even white middle class women are subject to domestic and sexual violence that they don't choose, which disproportionately affects disenfranchised communities of women.

Wage parity and education play into all of that because even here in the west, lower wages for women dictate womens' life and family choices and womens' lack of education also affect those things. So they are not separate issues.

The "slut walk" concept is actually "forcing" things on women because it's taking certain dress/behaviours and labelling it as "slutty" and then calling this clever/ironic/subversive or what have you. But it's not actually calling into question the fact that womens' flesh and how it is displayed is policed far more than necessary and that this is a pathology in our society. It's saying "I have the right to be slutty if I want" - so now anyone who wears a skirt above the knees or tight pants can been labelled as "doing a slut walk" and "being slutty." What if I just happen to like that length of skirt and don't think other peoples' view of my legs is of any serious concern? How dare they try to call me a "slut" or imply that there is anything sexual about my "choice?" As a Black, Latina woman, there are some who think I am a "slut" just for existing - why would I want to embrace that term any more than I'd call myself a n------r?

Liberal feminism is like "post-racial thinking" or "colour blindness" - you can only get there if you ignore a lot of peoples' realities and focus only on the privileged few.

All other women don't have these things forced on them. This is VERY real in some cultures, but there are many cultures that this isn't the case.

I do agree with you that this is an issue and needs to be addressed, I just don't want to get race and culture mixed up.

There are far more single mothers of colour as a percentage of mothers of colours than with white women, for instance. The fact that I personally am not one is one thing, but I see the issues that are predominant in my community and so my concerns as a woman envelope those issues more so than issues of "choice."

I don't think Saria is unhappy.

I think she just made a very valid criticism on the current feminist movement. In that one of it's many shortcomings is it does not acknowledge of issues of WOC.

One of the reasons I have a hard time identifying with feminism--lack of intersectionality. (except when males are around, then I'm a feminist and misandrist).

The wearing lipstick and heels was just an example of how the feminist movement limits what liberation and empowerment mean. If that makes any sense. Idk.

I don't know what unhappiness has to do with taking a critical view of society and being a thinking person, either. Some of us just like to question and dig deeper into the things we do every day and see around us - others don't, and that's their choice, but it has nothing to do with a person's level of happiness. That's rather condescending, don't you think?

I'M GOING TO TARGET TOMORROW!!!!

Are they advertising it at all, like in the store? I totally would have just gotten a tall if I didn't know this. I'm thinking I'll try a good ole' vanilla latte tomorrow. It's sweet because of the vanilla syrup, right? (stupid question, I know).

I actually tried the complicated white mocha drink we discussed and it worked! They didn't respond to me like I was crazy! It was good, much better with just two pumps for sure. Actually Mr. Spring ordered it because we were at a drive-thru and he was at the wheel and I had it written down for him to read. I'm pretty sure that put me right into the "she's lost it" category.
