I only like talking about my life with close friends. Definitely not with my family. I chose my friends; my family was just a random turn of the wheel of genetics. They're not criminals or unusually bad people; they're just not my kind. It happens.

So, it's over with my old guy friend repairman. Today makes visit number three he has either cancelled or simply not appeared for. I love him, but I need reliability. It's not even that I arranged my day around him and even removed the existing blinds in advance, but that I locked up the dogs for an hour while I waited for him to arrive. Now that ticks me off. They just looked at me, baffled and slightly wounded. "But, Mom........."

I'm hiring the other guy. Enough is enough.

I wonder if it would be a specific type of kitten. I imagine it to live in Iceland or somewhere Nordic.

That is all.

My nephew was supposed to set up my tv tonight around 6:00. He was supposed to come with his girlfriend, attach my tv to the cable and I would take them both out to fancy dinner and slip him $50 in addition. He knew that since he knows how I am and I've been very generous with him in the past.

He hasn't shown up. He didn't call. I don't respect unreliable people. I still hope he will show.

I don't like having to rely on other people. They can let you down. Jim and I are moving this weekend and we have several family members lined up to help. We'll see who follows thru.
It makes me angry and sad. I wonder if I should call him - maybe there was a misunderstanding? But I feel like a patsy. What do you think?

Call him. See what he has to say.
I reached him. He forgot! Oy.

Well, we are re-scheduled for tomorrow. I will take him and his girlfriend to dinner. He really sounded remorseful. He said he is setting an alarm for himself so that he won't forget again.

I find it hard to be mad at him, but unreliable people grrrrrr!!!!! Of course he is in his 20's - I hope he will get more reliable as he matures.

I really hope your relatives come through!!! I am super reliable. I am the one you can count on. Totally. That's one of my good points (but to be fair, I have plenty of bad ones LOL).

I'm not glad he forgot, but I'm glad you've rescheduled for tomorrow. I was going to suggest you post pics of all the parts and we could talk you through setting it up. I'm really glad he's coming

My niece (also in her 20s) is horribly unreliable. Drives me batty. I am very much a "if I tell you I'll do it, I'll do it" person.

^Woooooo! Have one for me, CP!

Claudine, it is a lovable movie.

I had to run out and return a movie, and one of the employees in the store talked my head off. She was the nicest woman. Somehow we got into a conversation about ordering things on line and she cracked me up. She's new to this area, from Hawaii, but has not been home in years. She wanted to order fish cakes from one of her favorite restaurants but it was going to be $35 for a $4 fish cake. She was so upset that she had to do without. I said try to get their recipe and make it! Lol. Typically, anything thats a ... cake, is super easy to make. Fish cakes, potato cakes, bean cakes, crab cakes... All a snap. She will just have to drive about an hour to pick up the freshest, and more unusual (to this area) ingredients. I am sure some stores in Ashvegas carry sauces or mayo needed for it, and the farmers mkt has some good fresh fish. I think I made her day. It will cost more than $4, but she can have almost everything on hand for her next craving.

Good deed done.

Yes, I am bored.

Hmmm... Never heard of Cornbread Bibingka until just a few moments ago. Apparently it's compared to a (parts of) South Carolina or Georgia cornbread (even with the rice flour and coconut milk) which means I'd hate it, but I still learned something new. I'm a North Cackalacky corn bread girl, through and through. Put down that sugar and grease the cast iron skillet!

That just reminded me of something I saw years ago. Some woman had asked people to contribute a cornbread recipe that would make her friends from NC happy. Someone told her to put sugar in, and I almost stroked out. Luckily, a person came behind them and and corrected that. I believe he said he was Albanian, and knew NC cornbread was similar. I like pointless and fun factoids.

While I have food on the brain... I do not understand the point of putting a tiny sprinkle of salt on a nice cut meat so "it does not override the flavor, and people can taste the meat" and then dousing it in a half inch thick layer of garlic and onion powder. That's not even rational.

I finally got around to making quinoa porridge that Saria mentioned months ago. Took it to work with me last night. It was nice enough and very filling, which is what I need during the night, otherwise I pick at whatever crappy food is around.
Also made the Christmas pudding vodka that CurlyLaura mentioned and enjoyed a glass every night last week when I was up late watching Wimbledon. Very good. Strong, but I am a bit of a lightweight when it comes to alcohol.

I should have known better than to have a large glass of caffeine and go to the store after work. Wired. At least my shopping is done, and I was alert enough to drive.

Mini Rant:
How did I somehow miss the news/debate over people on public assistance being entitled to free cell phones a couple years ago? #1. I hate the word "entitled", with a passion, which is bad for me because it's thrown around all the time now. I'm sorry, but no you are not entitled to free cell phones because they provide peace of mind, and everyone is entitled to peace of mind. If that were true... I don't know what people expect, aside from everything. The US debt total is stomach turning yet more bleepty bleep is added on, for everyone else to pick up, every day. I doubt I will see what I have been paying into... the social security or retirement benefits my parents did, if at all, but enjoy your free phone as others enjoy their pay checks continuously reducing. * 4 Billion Dollars in 2011.

Don't get me wrong, I am glad assistance is there for people who need it. I think many programs are fantastic, but last time i checked a cell phone does not feed, keep you warm, or put clothes on your back.

Fifi, I'm with you on the mini rant. 153%. The entitlement mentality really gets up my nose sideways. I think assistance is awesome and important. And I really don't know how to manage it better but when things like this come up, I know there has to be a better way. My current mini rant is about a young lady who is on public assistance but just threw her 2 year old (another on the way) a birthday party that included a $300 cake.

On another note: I have to go out to a campus today to monitor testing. I brought snacks. It's 800 and I've already dug into the Swedish fish and the Gardettos. I'm pretty sure it'll go downhill from here

Well, that's just it. One of my friends would blow up every time she took her kids to day care. Unwed mother, 2 children, $800 a month day care bill for each, and she worked her tail off since age 12 to help support her family (mom, siblings, cousins and then her children). She could hardly pay her bills, her car was repossessed and she had to use her moms, and she couldn't get any assistance because she was $20 over the cut off. She would watch people roll up in a brand new Lexus, drop their kids off at free day care, get out of the car in their bathrobe, and go back home. How the hell does that happen? We're all in a mess. It's been in a mess, for a long time, and just keeps going down hill. I know I will have to make sacrifices, but others need to make them too. Dropping "I'm entitled" from your vocabulary would be number one.
When I hear terms like "hipster" I think, who told cliques they could leave high school??

I would also get upset when I watched people who worked all their lives, or as long as they could, not be able to get disability, when they honestly were disabled. They had to fight for years, and years, and years. Many were in their 60's-70's. And I watched my 19 year old former classmate get it on her first attempt. She never worked a day in her life, and her "disability" was laziness. She was a pill junkie, and she laid on her butt popping pills all day. *12 Darvocet, and a hand full of Valium a day was her normal, and when she ran out, she would ask others to get an Rx for ner* It blew my mind. Top priority should be those who truly can't do.
